Surely prisons fail because people go there too late. All of the so-called alternatives are soft options that do little to nothing to discourage criminal behaviour. Thus, those who appear before the courts time after time and do not go to prison see criminal behaviour not being punished. By the time they go to prison they are already habitual criminals, and any attempt at rehabilitation is far too late.

Surely they should be imprisoned the FIRST time they offend - for a short period - and have the error of their ways rigorously drummed into them in an effort to return them to the straight and narrow.

Well its a tough one this. Prisones fail because they are like hotels and there is no rehabilitation anymore, and prison officers have to call the crooks MR or Miss or Mrs !!!The officers are scared of upsetting the little darlings as the crooks use their human rights to keep the officers inline.Well the scum break the law, they have to have their rights taken away, just as they did to the victim.
I believe that a sentence should be served in its entirety,no giving someone 14years then letting them out in 2 .
Its a good idea to let the crims see what they have done emotionally to the VICTIMS .
We seem to forget the victims i think and we have only just let them give statements in court here in U.K before the judges sentence.
Get rid of our nanny state and let the crooks serve hard time like they did in Victorian times,we are too up ourselves with crooks rights there are 42 charities for criminals to get help after they are locked up etc,and only ONE for victims.
We have to do something drastic,as where i live they are committing crimes to get into prisons as its a better life than they get outside,That's surely not right,I wish i had the answer, but we are already ruled by these losers,by being scared to go out and scared to stay in,lets claim our streets back from these scumbags.

Essex Ron, I think i remeber you - the former policeman right?
Well, I guess you would know what you're talking about saying soft options don't work. But I thought in NZ they had good success with idea of getting offenders and victims together..you know so the offender can see the effect of what they did etc. I think this was shown to work well for first timers.

Personally I would say there is no simple answer to this deep problem...and I would also be wanting to take any 'solutions' back to the better- parenting level. Offenders end up that way becuase of broken homes don't they?

The only thing which deters criminals from committing crimes is fear of being caught. The only way to increase that likelihood, and therefore fear, is a greater police presence, ie more bobbys on the beat. Harsher punishments do not deter criminals because no criminal expects to be caught. That said, some of the lenient terms you read about in the papers are just ridiculous. Criminals can't reoffend so long as they're in custody.

Bring back an eye for an eye that would get things into perspective.

The double jepody laws were changed now they have to have a good look at all the other laws and give out proper punishments.

Instead of wasting tax dollars on high tech gadgets and assorted crap under the banner of "homeland security" - how about raising the pay for the city, county and state officers - why should the feds get all the best pay? Some of us don't want to be feds - we like serving communities we can actually see everyday...people we know...but the pay SUCKS.

Prisons have lost their effect because of all the rights granted to the prisoners. They need to be a place you don't want to go to even once.
