I was wondering how long it took to get a license when I'll be learning as a beginner. I can put the car into gear and gear shift but have never been on the road.
Have you any instructors you can recommend?

I mean: from now, how long will it take for me to get a license?

I want to learn in 2 months. My girlfriend and I are driving to Ireland for xmas and I would like to share the driving so its not too much for her.

It's not London (the link below is for Manchester) but their are lots of companies that offer intensive crash courses over the course of a week - you start the week taking the theory test, and if all goes well, you end the week taking the practical. Such intensive courses don't come cheap though. Generally, you should count on having at least ten lessons before taking a test, but this really depends on how quick you learn and how confident you are on the road. I'd reckon six to eight weeks of lessons and a test would be the absolute best you could hope for. As for an instructor - ask your friends, work colleagues and family who they used to pass their test and if would recommend anyone. London's a helluva big place and the choice of driving schools will be HUGE, as any casual glance through the local yellow pages will prove. Quite frankly, I would advise learning to drive outside of the capital anyway, but on the other hand, if you can drive in London then you can drive ANYWHERE!!!

It took me the best part of a year to learn and pass my test. So you'll be hard pushed to pass in time for Christmas especially with the waiting list for tests which can be up to 3 months.

Being able to tecnically drive the car is a whole world from being able to drive on public roads with a hundred and one other things to think about and negotiate.

It's very noble of you wanting to pass your test to share the driving with your girlfriend, this was my incentive as well.

I wish you every Luck though

it will take longer than 2 months. You have to do your theory test, have some lessons and the waiting list to take your practical test can take as long as 8 weeks. It can take at least a year to learn to drive.

getting your licence takes as long as it takes for you to get the hang of driving! just keep at it with an instructor... block 10 lessons did the trick when i was earning.. passed first time.... good luck
