I have 4 cats that need flea treament.
The problem is I don't want to use a chemical
because of small children, even on spot.
If anyone knows of the safest and best flea treatment for cats,I would love to hear your opinion.

Well, you need to use something effective!!! I use either Advantage or Frontline. Apply it at night right after the kids go to bed, and by the next morning it is all adsorbed. Then it is not a threat to the kids. Even though it isn't anyway.
I know a vet that actually used Advantage ON the kids for head lice.
There is no home remedy for fleas that works well. If you do not use something effective, the kids suffer flea bites.

You know, unless your children are licking the cats you shouldn't have problems with chemicals.

What you need is a layered attack.

The issue really starts with the severity of your flea problem. If all four of your cats have serious fleas you are going to need the kind of flea treatment you get from the vet. There's no way around it. I used to get the Frontline, and it worked really well. Well enough that I only used it during the spring and summer and used the Hartz from Wal-Mart during the winter and fall.

If your problem is starting to get out of hand you will probably need to fumigate your house as well. Once those little buggers get into the carpet or upholstery the only way out is to kill them all. Take everyone on a field trip for a few hours, including the cats. The stuff that you just spray on the carpets and the cat's bedding isn't always effective.

Finally, you may need to protect your home from the outside. Since we're fully into fall, there shouldn't be nearly as many pests being brought in from the yard, however there are treatments you can use on the perimeter of your house that can stop not only fleas but ants and mosquitoes as well.

I agree with what the others said - put a spot on treatment like Frontline, Advantage or Revolution on after the kiddies are asleep. It spreads over the animal over a few hours & it won't hurt your kids once it is absorbed. Even though it can be quite costly (I bought 3 packets of Revolution in 1 go for our 4 cats to do them for 4 months) it's worth it & works out cheaper than spending heaps on shampoos & sprays & whatnot. Just remember to treat the environment too - vacuum every cloth thing in the house like carpets, beddings, couches. A spray like Flea Ban is good too to spray around the house. It won't hurt the kids - do it while they're out of the house sometime.

the type i use is front line plus this helps very well and works for a long time go to your vet and make sure you ask him for this. Its the only type that works for my dogs and cats and i got 2 dogs and one cat. What also you should do is take the cats and wash them then shampoo your carpets mix in flea shampoo whith your cleaner for your carpet this will help get rid of the fleas with out putting harm full chimicals in the air. also should not hirt the children. if you let the font line sink in on the fure the kids will be okay to pet them again front line should not hirt little ones after it drys does not take long to sink in. just put your cats in a carer untill it dose then let the kids play with them again.

Valerie,
"Advantage" is what I use on my cats, it works great. You can buy this product at Petsmart and that will save you a office call to the Vet. It's a little pricey, but it does work. This is very safe, and it absorbs into the skin very quickly. Just choose a time to apply when the kids won't be around for a few hours, maybe at night before you go to bed.

There is an injection available ( made by Bayer if I remember well ) which tackles the problem. Your vet will help.
