Silicon Controlled Rectifiers. These are used as an electronic switch especially in the Industrial electronics field to switch many types of electrical devices . For example the TYN 816 is an 800volt 16 amp device so would be capable of switching fairly heavy appliances. Only a very small control voltage is required to cause the SCR to switch. Advantage over a relay is no relay contacts to arc or burn !! Does this answer your question ? there is quite a bit more could be said but I have explained the bare bones of the device . Cheers Pete
