Absolutely yes. Even people are influenced by whom we live with (and we try oh so hard to keep up our individuality), pets are so much more succeptible.

The cat will even catch the mood you are in, and your attitude towards another person, on a sub-conscious level. Consider what catching your moods and attitudes all the time means - your cat will understand you and tune in with you.

I can also perfectly understand you when you mean your cat is amazing. Enjoy his company!

Yes, every animal is born with a set of instructions, called genes, to determine certain characteristics in its character, however it has long been identified that the environment in which the animal lives will also influence behaviour. Conditioning and learning are two of the classic ways in which animals are influenced to behave differently. Your cat will have learned that certain behaviour by itself will result in a change in your behaviour towards it. This works positively and negatively which is why animals not only be rewarded for good behaviour but also should not be rewarded for bad behaviour. Much of the behaviour you will have instilled in your cat will have been subconscious, such as sitting on lap results in stroking, miaowing by the door results in being let out etc...

I think so. My cat definitely knows what he can get away with when his mom is not there but his dad is. I am the disciplinarian and will let him know if he is not supposed to be somewhere. Plus, he is very laid back like us, yet still has his hyper moments.
We know this other couple who has this horrible acting cat. But, the cat is tormented by two dogs and has been tormented in other ways. There is a reason why she acts that way!

Interesting question. I've thought about that also and seen a pattern with the cats that I have had (at different times). My cats and even goldfish seem to have had strong personalities, great fondness of food and very vocal. I guess they can take after their surroundings, other pets, members of the family.

I believe that the people with who the lives, influence its behaviour more so than its personality. my cat is very relaxed and gentle but will push his limits in terms of jumping on the table when i am home but will not even enter the kitchen if my mum is at home. He is always gentle with everybody and has never scratched in the fourteen years that we have had him. That is his way but his behaviour in terms of where he goes and asking for food varies between the person in the room.

I was just talking about this last night. I have never had a cat that hides when people come over-they all want to party and be around people and sit on people's laps and rub against them. If there were a100 people in my small house, they would be there in the mix.I think that it depends on the cat and how long you have it and what it has been though. AND how you treat it.

A cat's personality can be influenced by the way it is treated, probably not so much about one personality rubbing off on another.

Oh yea! I have a cat that was raised in a van with some nice teenage dead heads before she escaped to my house, I know because they came by but let us keep her, who thought she was a little person,, when she wanted your attention, she would reach out with her paw on your arm, like a person. the other cat I got was raised by two little girls,, they used to put perfume on her and have tea parties with her and carry her around, so she is resigned to being picked up and carried around,, She is very silly, and i think she understands people the best.

Yes i think it will be. I remember one of my friends from school years ago having a dog who was as crazy as the rest of the family, so i would imagine an animal's personality would be influenced by it's surroundings and the people who it spends time with.

I think dogs take on the looks of there owner so yeah it could be possible that cats pick up on personality rather than looks.
