In UK coastal areas, black lichen is found on supralittoral rocks. Yellow lichen is found on the surface of rocks protected from wind and spray.

So yes, i'd imagine they could colonise the same area. Is the sort of association you mean, or do you mean something like the association between fungus and alga in all lichens?

They are part of the same family, but they tend to form in different places.
