also, were they catholic or other?
where did they live? monasteries, convents, near villages or not?

As America was mostly settled by Protestants, Catholics are in short supply. The Spanish were

I'd imagine so (unless the movie Two Mules For Sister Sara led me wrong!). I'd guess a good number were Mexican, due to its being a mainly Catholic country (especially then).
