I do this ! I ended up dating a fashion model this way . Why all the attitude and paranoia ? I used to see older people do it all the time.Strike up conversations with others they don't know. I'm not that old either . I mean, wouldn't it be nice to see people on a bus ,tram or train being a little more sociable . Even for the sake of just being polite .

IT WOULD BE GREAT IF PEOPLE WOULD START CONVERSATIONS BETWEEN STRANGERS. NOW-A-DAYS IT MAY BE BECAUSE PEOPLE ARE SCARED BECAUSE THE WORLD HAS GOTTEN SO MEAN. I AM THE TYPE OF PERSON WHO WILL BE IN A MALL OR JUST ANYWHERE AND IF SOMEONE SITS NEXT TO ME, I WILL STRIKE UP A CONVERSATION BUT MY SISTER WHO IS VERY OUT GOING HATES IT WHEN PEOPLE DO THAT. I'M LIKE YOU, I JUST THINK IT'S POLITE TO SPEAK.IT FEELS SO WEIRD WHEN I AM IN A BIG CROWD OF PEOPLE AND EVERYONE IS IN A HUGE HURRY AND NO ONE IS SPEAKING. IT FEELS LIKE WE ARE ALL ON THIS HUGE PLANET AND EACH PERSON DOESN'T KNOW THE NEXT PERSON IS ALIVE.

Well, it is not as unusual in some other countries. I have heard the Sociologists say that Americans have the largest personal space, that is the space around them that the consider "private" and are uncomfortable if people they don't know enter it. Now in some countries it is considered rude if you can't smell the other person's breath when you talk - that would freak most Americans off. So the way that most Americans deal with the necessity of public transport is by ignoring all the other people. Hence, not that many people notice others and start talking.

Of course, then there is my husband. He talks to everyone - on the bus, on the train, in restaurants, in Walmart. He has no qualms about starting conversations with just anyone and I have to say, he has met a large number of interesting people that way. So who's to say he is wrong. But alot of people feel really uncomfortable when he does it.

It would be so nice to go back to the time when fear is not the first thing we think of when riding public transportation. Even on the Internet. I remember a couple of years ago a pregnant Lady was looking for a breeder dog. Another lady contacted her and after a couple emails they met. The lady kidnapped the pregnant lady and cut the baby from her stomach. Now this sounds gross and awful but it happens so with that kind of thing going on to day no wonder people are so cautious. It makes us all reserved and sometimes on the defensive. It's a shame but that is the way it is.

I don't believe in talking to strangers. The tram or the train should be yakkity yak free. Let people travel in peace and quiet. They don't want to be privy to total strangers' conversations. If all the passengers start talking to each other, wouldn't it be a racket? Already there's so much noise pollution, don't add to it. Leave people be and don't strike up conversations they would rather not have. People are already too stressed with their work ahead of them or would like to wind down going home. Let them have some peace. If you like yakking so much, join the Yakkity Yak Anonymous.

u r one of those people that go up to the most notrious pissed off person and say Hi, right? Look anytime someone can get mugged on a crowed street and everyone walks by like nothings happening, well that tells u something about America. Everyone is afraid of everyone. Rightly so, even priests. I'll talk to an old woman, but if i think she's senile, i'll up and walk away. Old men r rapist too.

I published a question something like this, i do no longer think of everybody here brazenly starts off communication with strangers, actual strangers. you may start up a communication approximately something you're attracted to because you may tell he/she is involved interior an analogous component, such as you pay attention your universal track blasting, you spot a team of tuners and you ensue to be a vehicle guy or woman... and so forth and so forth. while replaced into the final time you started a communication with somebody completely out of your age team... the way they gown and so forth and so forth, emos won't pass strike a communication with rappers

They are afraid to start a conversation, if they are nice they could end up with a stalker, get mugged or worse.
This day and age, you just don't know who your talking to.
Hope this helps.

i wish we did still live in a time where it was normal to make conversation with strangers, it would make life alot more friendly and interesting

sadly though, if someone tries to talk to me on public transport, which they frequently do, I assume they're slightly barmy and politely shift away
