If you're worried about MAOI's, avoid Nardil (phenelzine) and Parnate (tranylcypromine).
But, while Paxil and Wellbutrin do not contain MAOI's, they still have side effects.

Paxil has other serious side effects besides weight gain and increasing the risk of birth defects. Children and teenagers who take Paxil may become more depressed, according to some studies. The FDA states that one out of every 50 children or adolescents who take antidepressants such as Paxil may think about suicide, talk about it, or go through with the act. Other Paxil side effects include seizures, dry mouth, sleep disturbances, tremors, and decreased appetite. Paxil may also cause bleeding, especially if it is taken with NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti–inflammatory drugs, such as aspirin, ibuprofen or naproxen). If patients try to stop taking Paxil suddenly instead of gradually decreasing their dosage, they may experience dizziness, electric shock sensations, abnormal dreams, agitation, anxiety, mood changes, and nervousness.
The most common side effects with Wellbutrin are weight loss, loss of appetite, dry mouth, skin rash, sweating, ringing in the ears, shakiness, stomach pain, agitation, anxiety, dizziness, trouble sleeping, muscle pain, nausea, fast heartbeat, sore throat, and urinating more often.

I've used both. Actually Welbutrin can make you lose weight but made me very irritable, I took it for a year when my dad died- BIG up side is You will be Extremely orgasmic- NO KIDDING! So, if your in a good relationship, he'll forgive your irritability! LOL But be careful- I really was a bit psycho! In the end... it was a thyroid issue. Get a tsh, t4 & MOST IMPORTANTLY Thyroid antibodies test. This may not be it, but if your antibodies are high it could cause panic/anxiety, hot flashes, depression & weight gain. I encourage you to google Hypothyroidism and Hashimotos Disease. GOOD LUCK TO YOU!

I was on Wellbutrin for depression. There is slight weight gain but if you're active it won't be significant. At least it wasn't for me. Everyone reacts to medication differently. Instead of antidepressants to control hot flashes, I was put back on the pill to control the whole perimenopause thing. I have noticed that my hot flashes have significantly reduced in number and severity. Not to mention the benefits of controlling the irregular bleeding.
