Atma or Soul is not the same as Brahman. Brahman is effulgence of the Supreme Personality of God. Atma is Marginal potency or Tatastha Shakti.
Vedic Literatures describe 3 energies of Lord. 1) Antarang Shakti or Internal Potency, 2)Bhairanga Shakti or External Potency and 3) Tatasta Shakti or Marginal Potency. We fall in the category of Marginal Potency, Higher than Material energy.

Brahmana(Effulgence), Paramata(Super Soul ) and Bhagavan(Personality of Godhead) are the three features of God. This is explained in Srimad Bhagavatam (1.2.11).
“The Absolute Truth is realized in three phases of understanding by the knower of the Absolute Truth, and all of them are identical. Such phases of the Absolute Truth are expressed as Brahman, Paramätmä, and Bhagavän.”
These three divine aspects can be explained by the example of the sun, which also has three different aspects, namely the sunshine, the sun’s surface and the sun planet itself.
Sun ray has same quality as the Sun but still it is not the same as Sun Planet Himself.

You would have to continue this cycle of birth and death if you do not find a way to stop it and return to the eternal existence in Kingdom or God or Vaikuntha. But it is not necessary to pressurize your brain to extract out knowledge.
At Least Bhagavad Gita does not recommend that. Krishna says
“Just try to learn the truth by approaching a spiritual master. Inquire from him submissively and render service unto him. The self-realized souls can impart knowledge unto you because they have seen the truth.” (BG 4.34)
Even in Mundaka Upanishad it is clearly said
“To understand these things properly, one must humbly approach, a spiritual master who is learned in the Vedas and firmly devoted to the Absolute Truth.”
[Mundaka Upanisad 1.2.12]

From my understanding, it's a relation of duality--Brahma is everything, but everything is not equal to Brahma.

ETA: Should be "anything is not equal", as in no thing is equal. Again, just my understanding of it.
