DVD Audio is a high resolution format for a higher performance option to CD and similar to SACD (another elevated performance audio format).
Neither DVD Audio nor SACD (although SACD does have more of a following within audiophile community) have a significant share of the consumer electronics media market. It looks like the new Blu-Ray Disc and HD DVD video formats are headed down the same path as the high resolution audio formats. "Can't we all [i.e. media format wars] just get along?"
Just like the "popularity" of vinyl records is no longer mainstream, but very popular with the audiophile and music lover neighborhoods, no doubt because of the price and the lack of promotion, sales of these formats are far outweighed by CDs, DVDs, and now iPod music machines.
Read about these and all other audio and video formats on Wikipedia.org. Here are all of the formats that I can think of at the top of my head...

Music oriented DVD with both a picture and sound track. The audio track is usually Dolby Digital 2.0 and 5.1 and may also be DTS. In essence ... a surround sound music DVD (vs a stereo CD). DVD audio is abbreviated as DVD-A.
Is it popular? Yes, as shown by the increasing number of DVD-A's in the stores. That said, there are still more CDs available (although losing popularity).

It's a dead end. Very few people own or buy them. You need a special player to play them and a special receiver or preamp to connect the player too. The discs are priced much higher than CDs or even DVDs.
The format will be gone within the next 2-3 years.

Basically it is upgraded CD, instead of only two channels, it has five or more channels to make it sound like you are in the middle of a concert.
