Hello,
I lived in the state for four years. I accumulated around 2000 dollars of debt with American express.
A debt collection agency called me and told me to pay a monthly payment. I approved and paid the first month but couldn’t pay after. I had to leave the state because of my visa. I couldn’t pay the amount in 2003 because I didn’t have a job. We all know the problems we had those days. I left the US in MARCH.
I tried to get in touch with American Express from morocco and explain the issue but they said that my file was sent to a collection agency again.
I want to resolve this problem and pay everything now. It may be too late.
If anybody can help me resolve this, I will appreciate.
Best,

You should have your mail forwarded to your new address in order to receive all your credit statements. By not paying on the credit cards your credit is already ruined. I am kind of confused if you are still in Morrocco or the US. Contact American Express again and see if they can find your account. If it is over 3 years old it is better not to pay it since you would be updating the credit file and it would remain on the account for another 7 years. Otherwise just leave it alone and in 4 years it will be off. As the debt gets older your scores will go higher. You might even be able to have it removed before the 7th year if you dispute it. It does happen especially if American Express can't verify the account which sounds to me they can't when you called.

ask amex to give you the contact info for the agency they sold it to. contact them and see what the deal is. Won't do much for your credit rating but may prevent a judgement.
