I am a muslim woman who chose her religion, and made the decision to wear hijab. Dont mix culture with religion. No woman gets stoned to death because she doesn't wear hijab. Please get your facts straight before you answer questions of this nature.

Unfortunately, most people are miseducated when it comes to muslim women. American media love to highlight the atrocities of the Taliban, and one of those horrible acts is forcing their women to wear all-encompasing robes and head coverings. Therefore, most people assume that ALL women wearing similar outfits are from cultures that want to oppress them. Therefore the conclusion that is eventually made is that muslim people want to oppress their women.

Muslim women are not considered oppressed because of a dress code. You will find that most religious oppression of women is due to the problem within the minds of men. Why don't men have a dress code for God? How many Muslim women would like to tell the men what parts of their body they are going to remove? If you study "The History of Civilization" on this planet (at a university not from a religion) you will learn that for thousands of years God was always considered to be a woman (called Goddess). Somewhere around the time that Judaism got its start everyone was made to believe that God was a man. And religion violence got its start, with no end in sight. I see a female God doing a better job without violence and with less oppression for women. If God can be given gender changes let's turn her back to being a woman again before religion violence destroys all life on this planet.

Im sorry, but like most people, I get the impression (from media) that muslim women are generally oppressed by their men, and that they are forced to cover their face & skin. I also thought that they were not allowed the same rights as men. This is what makes people think muslim women are oppressed, not the actual wearing of a hijab.
Maybe we just need more information.

I, too, am a Muslim woman who choose my religion. I, too, wear hijab because I WANT to. It is purely ignorance that causes people to think that women are oppressed or forced.

Modesty is a concept that is a matter of time and place as much as a matter of religion. As a 59 year old woman I am often shocked and displeased to see the clothing some young women wear who don't think they are immodest at all. I know my mother was upset with miniskirts back in the 1960s and I wasn't allowed to wear them. When you add cultural issues to the idea of modesty, you can have many viewpoints. It can be hard to accept that everyone doesn't look at things the same way, but it is important for us to try. Your question is a thoughtful and worthwhile inquiry into how different people think. It is not easy to understand viewpoints that are very different from our own or to understand why someone would choose to wear clothes that seem strange. I have a friend who is a Muslim convert. She chooses wear a hijab. For her it is a committment to thinking about how she interacts with the world. Nuns who are habited also make a choice to present themselves to the world in a particular way. The issue of beauty is not an issue for them. In the 1960s many orders of Catholic nuns chose to modernize or abandon their traditional habits. It was not an easy choice to make and many nuns I know were deeply troubled by the symbolic changes and by the practical issues of making clothing choices they had never had to make before. Some orders of nuns chose not to change their habits. Both groups had reasons for their choices that seemed good to them. I think that the most important thing is to try to accept people as you find them and allow them to dress the way they choose. As long as you are true to yourself and are modest and respectful by your standards, you shouldn't worry too much about what other people think. I know it is galling for you to feel you are being judged by others, but you are not responsible for the thoughts and judgments of other people. You are responsible for your own actions, your own thoughts and your own judgments. So think deeply about who you are, who you want to be and how you want to present youself to the world. If you are satisfied with yourself (remembering always that you are a work in progress!) then you are doing the right thing.

Presumably the nun has made a choice to wear it. Muslim women are forced to wear it, either by programming or by mandate from their male dominated society.

Nuns wear habit as a matter of tradition.
But nowadays many nuns have chosen not to wear the habit.

However, no one is out to beat or kill a nun if she chooses to wear regular clothes. That's a million miles away from the Muslim woman. No comparison here.

In most catholic circles, nuns are not required to wear the "habit" but a more modern subdued look. Also a nun is a "job", not all catholic wear it. Not all women who are muslim wear the hijab are oppressed, you will find them worn in more traditional countries, where young girls are not entitled to an education. Moderate Muslim women do not where the hijab.

Nuns are a minority of women, a very small minority. Also, nuns CHOOSE this way of life, they CHOOSE to join a religion that requires them to cover themselves almost entirely. They aren't threatened with violence of death. They aren't fearful for their life if they dare walk around in the presense of men wearing anything other than full body covering. Show me Muslim women in a Muslim majority country who truly, TRULY choose to wear the hijab for reasons that have nothing to do with coersion and fear and then maybe you've got yourself a valid comparison.

It's a nice comparisson. I've never heard it before.
I would draw the distinction between choosing to wear something and being required to wear something.

There was a fire in a girls' school in Saudi Arabia a few years ago and many children died because the religious police would not let the girls leave without proper clothing. That is a serious problem.
