I am painting squares on my wall, if I use pencil it leaves black stuff on wall where I tried to clean it off. What else can I use that will not leave a residue behind?

Old style black board chalk would be the best. Else the chalk the tailors use to write on fabric also will just rub of when u dont want it... I dont know what u call it.

Mark off the squares with masking tape (low tack is best but don't worry) and take it off before the paint is dry as this prevents getting ragged edges. You can also use what is called a "chalk line" for longer straight lines. This is just a long piece of string that you rub along its length with blackboard chalk (any pale colour that you can see against the colour of the wall) To use it you fix one end where you want to start - you can get someone to hold it or use a small nail, do the same at the other end. To make the line pull the middle a little way from the wall and then let it snap back and you will find that you have a clear straight line marked just where you want it.

Use painter tape (the blue kind) it won't tear the drywall like masking tape, to mark your measurements you want to use either a chalk line that will dust off, or a contractor pencil that you can erase.

I would suggest you use painter's tape. You can lay it where you need it but it pulls off easily and leaves no marks. You can buy it anywhere they sell paint supplies.
