You may wish to consider getting a “study Bible” (rather than a “regular Bible”). A study Bible adds notes to the text of a regular Bible that should help you understand the Bible better. There are many different “brands” of study Bibles, each with its own name, such as The Nelson Study Bible, the Word in Life Study Bible, or the Life Application Study Bible: New King James Version.
One unique printing of the New Living Translation that resembles a study Bible is called "The Rock". It is written for teens from ages 12 to 16, but I believe this Bible could be enjoyed by people of any age because it has hundreds of added notes that explain the character of God and why people in the Bible made the choices they did.

It is possible to get accurate translations of the original text of the Bible. Check the Companion Bible from Kregel Publishing - two-thirds of each page is notes on original language text -- very enlightening. If you do not understand what you read then perhaps you should pray to god to help you get the meaning. Sometimes if you just take a chapter and read it and then go lie down and clear you r mind of everything but that chapter, you will gain enlightenment on it. It helps me sometimes anyway. Can't hurt to try.

The Bible is a long long letter authored by God, written through the instrumentlaity of divinely inspired men (and women) of God and ADDRESSED to His kids (the people of God). They understand God's language. Ask one of them to help you decipher the book.

to understand the Bible you must humble yourself. meaning if you try to understand it within your framework or have a pre-thought regarding the verses you read, you only get what you have thought previously.
before reading the Bible why dont you say this, " Lord Jesus, I need to understand the verses I want to read now, please help me."
if you say the prayer earnestly, you will get the way. it works for me.
BTW, one chapter of Rick Warren's book The Purpose Driven Life tells you about how to get the understanding of Bible reading.
