When this goverment came to power nine years ago what I think they should have done is changed the law regarding with teenagers or any body that steels somebody's car wich is some body's else's pride and joy should be put in prison for at least two years. When they get out then be made to pay for any damage they have coursed, and if it was a youngster they should pay for any damage they coures later in life when they start work if they dont want to work they pay out of any benifits they get. Or make their parents pay. There is thounds and thounds of Afro Carabeans in our prisons and waiting to be deported but the deportation papers are not done until they come out of prison, so they are held some where else, what I think they should do the paper work while they are inside and deport them straight away the day they are released. I'm 62 now not rearly old but in my time I find things are getting worse in this country. I would love to have had grand children. What future would they have.

Foreign Nationals make over half of the inmates in our prisons!! The prisoners come from 168 different countries, according to official figures, but half are from just six countries: Jamaica, the Irish Republic, Nigeria, Pakistan, Turkey and India. Just another example of total incompetency on behalf of our "joke" of a Government!! Why are these nationals still here? WHAT takes so long to deport them? A soft, useless, Government!!!!!

Er, when this (Labour) government came to power, it did start locking more people up. That's one reason why the prisons are overcrowded. And the government has tried to tackle the problem eg decriminalisation of canabis, expansion of the tagging scheme. It has also tried to increase prison places but with Treausry insistence on PFI, the pace of building has slowed to a snail's pace

The government is trying to deport people but the receiving country often won't take them back; if the receiving country is an EU member, then (a) the consent of the prisoner is needed and (b) the other EU country may retailiate by doing the same.

The short term answer is to create more prison space eg the ex-Paratrooper barracks in Dover. No point in being 'Tough on Crime, Tough on the causes of crime' if you can't follow through due to no prison places

Their are a lot of people in our prison's that have committed less serious crimes. I.E, non payment of fines, stealing cars without permission, non payment of poll tax, and the list goe's on. That is why the prisons are over spilling. You mention deportation in your question, i really don't think that would help,as they would come back into the country under a different alias. They are going to have to build more prisons, to deal with the sheer number of prisoners that are going through the system. I feel sorry for our youngster's and their children, as you have said what future have they got to look forward to?

Because more people are caught and sentenced to a prison term. I disagree that there are thousands waiting to be deported. Apparently the number is not that great and would not reduce the prison population by any great degree.More prisons have to be built. This is expensive and will take time. In the meantime I would release people who are in prison for crimes such as non payment of fines or fraud. Perhaps we should do what we did in the past and send them off to Australia.

There are two solutions to this.

One is very expensive, and the other is very cost effective.

You can either invest in enormous new prisons, which is extremely expensive, or you can cut police budgets, which would reduce the number of inmates automatically.

I can't help but think that a lot of prisoners really shouldn't be in prison at all, and of those that are, maybe a very high percentage should really be in mental institutions: except they closed most of them down.

So much for care in the community!

are prisons are over crowded because they are to cushy .criminals commit crimes knowing if they get caught they will only have to do half there sentence in complete comfort with 3 good meals a day warm beds, sky TV etc .so what we need to do is stick 2 fingers up at the do gooders and make prisons prisons were we take away the prisoners rights ,and in stead of jailing foreigners and illegal immigrants for crimes we should deport them straight away

Our prisons are overcrowded because we have lots of criminals in this country all encouraged by the soft lefties and bleeding heart liberals.
Keep on building more prisons and keep on filling them - no early release or tagging - make the criminals suffer, it is the only thing they understand.

because all alternative methods are underfunded, the law changes constantly, the work load is massive, people don't pay fines when given them so now its a community order or prison, people on remand for months waiting for sentencing etc etc etc
