I´m not a morning person but I´ve changed jobs and now I´m forced to get up at 7am. Haven´t done that for centuries! I can´t seem to get into the habit of falling asleep early enough. I go to bed and stay awake for hours! Of course, during the day I´m exhausted and look dreadful... Any tips?

Your "internal clock" needs to readjust. Figure out how many hours of sleep you need per night. Then subtract that from the time you have to wake up. After a few weeks, problem solved, Your body will adjust.

You must not cheat during the day by napping however; At least during the adjustment period.
Good luck.

You could try coffee when you wake up, or even wake up an hour early, chug a pint of cold coffee, and sleep for an hour. Consume no caffeine for the rest of the day. Repeat if necessary.

You could try over the counter sleep aids or herbs like valerian or chamomile.

If you are tired but not tired enough, take a hot shower. When you are good and warm, turn the water down to the coldest you can handle. Stand in it for a minute, turning occasionally. Then go hot for a bit, and then maybe back and forth a few more times. Might help a bit. It's good for you, anyway.

Still not there? Lay on the floor with your legs up the wall. After practice, the angle will be 90 degrees.... face up, butt touching wall, legs straight up the wall, toes pointing straight out from wall. Relax and pay attention to your breathing. Breath deeply and use your stomach. Hands at your side, and occasionally stretch hands behind you on floor. Lay this way until the stretching pain (in your lower back) becomes a different kind of pain, kinda unnatural and wrong. (if your legs merely fall asleep, pull them down for 10 seconds or so and try putting them back up... hopefully you'll avoid the tingle... if your legs are too tight, you won't stretch your back - that's fine, just keep practising regularly)

At first, you won't make a nice 90 degree angle against the wall, and at first you will only be able to go 15 minutes. (don't stop before 15 minutes... you'll miss the point entirely) Eventually you will work up to 45 min or more, and by then you should have the added benefit of having very little back pain. Don't fall asleep in this pose. If you aren't relaxed enough to sleep after this, then at least you will have gotten the 15 minutes of rest. In some circumstances this stretch is more effective than a nap.

Guy above me said read something... that's the best... read something interesting but really hard to grasp... i like quantum physics or something.

Oh - I totally understand! I had the same problem when I used to work for Starbucks. Did you know that we had to get to work at 4:15am to get everyone coffee by 5!?!?! So, some things I did, try herbal sleep supplements and melatonin. Perhaps you should try a sleep aid to just help you get on a earlier schedule. In the morning, take a shower to help wake you up and have some coffee. The transistion will be hard, but if you stick to it, you'll get used to it soon!

Set your alarm for when you'll be getting up in the morning for school. Put the alarm as far away from your bed as possible so you have to get up to turn it off. After it's off, don't let yourself get back into bed and instead jump right into the shower. The water will help wake you up. Then make sure you have something to do all day, and not just sitting around watching TV. If you stay active then you'll be able to go to bed earlier. Make sure to get 9-10 hours of sleep every night so you'll be ready for the day ahead of you.

ok its rough but it works
lets say you need 1 hour to get ready eat and drive their
and you need at least 6-8 hours sleep
you have to stay awake after work
naps count as sleep
till 11pm you will be tired and cranky
but set the alarm at 6am
and crash if it does'nt work and you only get a few cat naps in threw the night
dont worry you will be nice and tired on the 2nd or 3rd night

I have the same problem. I take sleep medicine only when I need to wake up early so it doesnt become a habbit. It really works, but if you dont like that idea, there are some herbal supplements available to.

Try to go to bed bit early , make your room dark and keep aside any thoughts that might bother you and forget the worries of getting up early the next morning. Think of something beautiful and you would go to sleep unnoticed.

It'll take some time to get used to & maybe just getting up earlier will make you tired enough to go to sleep earlier. Maybe try reading or doing something quiet/relaxing before you go to sleep. But keep doing the same thing every night so that you kinda trick your brain into knowing it's time to sleep.

i got ideas from those who answered my same question.

Reduce stimuli just before bedtime. Have just before sleeping habits like reading a book...just make sure those activites do bring youto bed!:)

Plan your day. You would have to re-adjust your schedule. Set time for entertainment, that way, you won't feel tired.:)

Wake up earlier than you used to, enough to go for a walk or do some energizing activites just before you go to work. or if you really can't afford that, have a warm shower then turn off the heater to pep you up!:)
