At one stage to join the British Police you had to be over a certain heigh and under a certain weight. Because these stipulations were removed we have had many inferior people joining the Police and therefore the qaulity of the police has dropped. Ergo the public has lost a lot of respect for the modern Police

It would help because im a police officer, 6"5 and 17 stone. I dont really have a problem dealing with big fuckers who want to cause trouble.

It quite amazes me how som people do actually get in.

There is one new lad who is just over 5ft tall and my little finger weighs more than him.

I was partnered up with him one friday nite,we went to a pub fight and nearly had the crap kicked out of him.

Its a health and safety risk in my view.

Command presense is there, if the officer KNOWS how to carry himself professionally, weather he/she is 4'2" or 6'10". I have seen videos of police Officers beigs shot at and sometimes killed in the line of duty no matter whe body frame they carry. Many police Depts have started a health plan to get their officers in shape, some agencies have gone as far as given monetary incentives to those officers that take and pass a PT test (Physical Fitness) and maintain such standard. I'm 5'10" 220# and have never had any problems when I dealt with the public. Command presence and IPC skills are the officers first "weapons".

With the type of education that an officer receives now days (which is equivalent to an Associates degree) I believe the standards have been raised rather than lower.

Im 28 and have just been rejected for a job as a PCSO (Police community support officer) because when I was 11 I found a broken bike in a drainage ditch (as you do) anyways i took some parts off it thinking it had been thrown away.
Anyways I got a caution for theft by finding and thats why they rejected me, I was told by the recruitment officer I was a dishonest thief.
I think its hard enough to get into the police and to be perfectly honest getting rejected for something that happened when I was 11 is a complete joke

Actually, they can! OK, you are talking about size and strength but everyone has different attributes. The 5' person may have much better communication skills and be able to resolve a situation without resorting to violence.

New applicants are judged on, amongst other things, their Body Mass Index and have to pass certain fitness tests and medicals etc.

Some of the restrictions had to be dropped (I understand) so that minorities were not excluded by virtue of their height - like women officers or many Asian officers etc.

DIVERSITY is the name of the game.

I think we should keep some restriction, but if we have too many restrictions there will be not enough police to control.. "the streets".

Don't forget about the growing number of overweight people too. That means there are less "fit" people to join the police force, hence the restrictions are lessened.

The purpose of the height restriction was not to look intimidating but because of the correlation (at least the perceived correlation) between largeness in a person and even-temperedness and the ability to stay calm and not lose their temper. Nowadays they have intensive psychological testing so presumably that is why the height restriction is now considered obsolete.

first, they ought to raise teh age to 25, and only after plodding johnny has had a job in the real world, and understands why folks do the things they do, instead of this supercillious attitude, and arrogance, that snot nosed 18 year olds have.

if plod wants to be respected, then plod has to earn it. plod has to stop fitting people up, lying in court, and start catching criminals, and ignoring PC.. and maybe we can ressurect george dixon...

modern plod is hamstrung by inneficcient political masters, as a result they arent doing a decent job, and in a save my **** from bancruptcy debacle, we now fine motorists for the smallest infringement..and call it safety.... hypocrisy. a good start would be to require them to have more than 2 o levels...

Or you could start carrying guns?

Here in America we have a saying "First rule about gun fights: bring a gun."

What is bringing a 6' plus frame to a gun fight gonna do?

I'm not saying being tall and stocky doesn't have its advantages on patrol - I notice people aren't so quick to challenge me when I am on hot calls - but I work with some officers who are a half foot shorter than I am, but act like they are seven feet tall.

Height is not relevant to a police officers ability to do the job. New officers are unlikely to be overweight as they have to take regular fitness tests. It is still relatively difficult to be accepted into the police.

it particularly is slightly too imprecise. If he or she see an explosion out at sea, how are they imagined to do something? they don't unavoidably ought to circulate look at an explosion purely some miles out at sea. A police officer is definite by making use of the accountability to act whilst they are in uniform and on criminal accountability (genuinely). in the event that they become in touch in an incident mutually as off accountability and make it known that they are making an attempt to act of their regulation enforcement skill then they are going to be held in can charge for what they do only as though that they were on accountability and in uniform. case in point, if a police officer is working or is on his or her recommendations-set domicile from artwork and remains in uniform and witnesses or passes by making use of an twist of destiny, they have a criminal criminal accountability to act. in the event that they are making use of to the food market on their break day and word a similar element, they are additionally required to act. they are able to not act in a technique it particularly is out of the scope of their education, so if an explosion at sea only isn't some element they are knowledgeable to safeguard then they don't look legally required to render help. that they had be considered to be like an complication-free citizen in the case. this would possibly not be the case in each and every state, in spite of the fact that it is in Florida, on the least.
