A dog gnashes its teeth when growling and not advancing at anything. Gnashing is like bearing ones teeth in introverted agony. That's the impression that gives me.
It's like the urge to bite something without necessarily having anything to bite. Not quite to be confused with grinding.

It's bad for the teeth. If you do this in your sleep you can get a guard so that you do not wear them out.
