Wright Brothers

DaVinci of course!

He was thinking flight way before Montgolfier, Langley, or the Wright's.

I would say Otto Lilienthal was more of a god father to flight than the Wrights too. It was going to be done sooner or later, they just had a very good day on the Dunes that December. And history goes on to show that the Wrights really didn't make any great contribution other than wing warping to control flight. I think people like Burt Rutan, Kelly Johnson, and Werner Von Braun contributed far greater advancements to flight than the Wrights.

It depends on what side of the Atlantic you live on...

However, it is widely agreed that the Wright Brothers helped to
design the general flight mechanisms used to control flight and are still (although considerably modified) used today.

Therefore, the Godfather(s) of Modern Aircraft are Wilbur and Orville Wright. Without their keen insight in developing a steering mechanisms to better control flight, the modern aircraft would not exist to day. The are the Godfathers of modern aircraft.
