Obviously inspired question from recent events...

I had thought that the tradition was to wait to name a US warship or Military vessel after an ex-President until he was either close to passing on, or after the fact?

Anyone know of information on the history of the timing behind these events?

Should that President who is considered for a ship's name have served on Active Duty at some point in his life before becoming President to increase his chances?

Would that rule Clinton out to have a ship named in his honor if it were so?

Do we have ships named after Ford and Carter as well?

Thanks for the imput.

There has been a Naval ship (whether it be a carrier, sub, etc.) named after EVERY U.S. President - with the exception of William Henry Harrison, who caught pneumonia during his Inaugural Address (it was raining), and dies a month later.

Military duty is NOT required to get a ship named after you. After all, as President, you are the HEAD of the military. I believe the current trend is that you have to have been out of office for a certain amount of time; obviously, George Bush reached that time (you don't need to be dead.)

Clinton will receive one, as will current President Bush.

I think they name them after president for a patriotic reasons, to tell the people that we made to a place where we can build and deploy these vessels because of our leaderships. I guess, they are saying, without them it would've been impossible to even have that power, security and money to build them. However, I would use OTHER NAMES besides presidents' names. I would dedicate it to events that were very important to us. Such as USS Pearl Harbor, or the USS Iowa Jima, etc. Which shows that they are built to fight for these events and protect the country.

There is an Attack Sub named the USS Carter.

However, I am not sure that every President has had a ship named after him. I couldn't find a reference to the USS Hoover or USS Herbert Hoover? Amg503....did I miss this one? What ship bore his name?

Bush Sr. was in the military, the army I believe. Clinton is a draft dodger and is unlikely to have a dingy named after him. The USS Jimmy Carter, a seawolf class submarine, was named after the ex-pres who had served in the navy.

Well, typically the person would be passed on. Reason being that if they went and got a ship named after them, and then they turned out to be a spy for North Korea, a serial murderer, or some such malarkey, it would be a slight embarrassment.

To my knowledge, Ford nor Carter have ships named after them.

Bush served on an aircraft carrier, but this suprises me that they did this so soon...and he wasn't all that famous either. Just a one-term president and a lackey for a son.

POLITICS are involved in naming Flattops. Tin cans are only for lesser than presidents, but non combatant ships are named after minorities. No capital ship will ever be named to honour non-white people.
