The "bite" is not actually a bite. It consists of the insect inserting a very very fine tube through your skin. The tube is so fine (finer than a human hair!) that you do not feel it. The insect also injects anti clotting chemicals and local anaesthetic while it is sucking your blood (thats the reason they bite you). Its these chemicals that cause the usual bite reaction up to a couple of hours later. The body recognises them for the foreign protein they are and goes into attack mode to limit the damage they can do to your body, this causes the allergic reaction and the pain, itching swelling etc.
Piece of useless information....Only the female of many insects bite and then only when they are reproducing (growing eggs)

If you are bitten by an insect they can inject like a local anaesthetic which takes a while to wear off

Because when an insect bites you it spits something into your bloodstream that stops the blood from clotting, enabling it to suck it up. It is this that causes an allergic reaction in most people. It takes an hour or two to start irritating your skin.

Them's sneaky wittew bugs in the garden there, Doreen. I suggest the next time you go to work in the garden that you spray yourself down, beforehand, with a good insect repellent. 3 M is a good one to use.

You were busy in the garden not paying attention to the itchiness until you stopped.
Some bugs take a while to give symptoms.

I guess it would depend on what bit you and your own resilience to whatever it was. Some people are more affected than others and some bite/stings are more venomous/irritating than others.
