does anyone else think it is crazy that people are selling these mutts that just a few years ago you couldn't give away and now they are selling for more than pure breds that are registered? I think the people buying them should go to their local animal shelter they can find these same dogs there.

Splinter obviously hasn't checked out the wonderful dogs available on www.petfinder.com .. I think they list some of ALL the designer breeds...
You are absolutely right.. It is ridiculous, but as long as the public is willing to buy the hype, people will continue making money off of them.
My mom had to give her Labradoodles away with a 50# bag of Purina! and still got stuck with one..lol... that was in about 1970.

she just thought they were an accidental poodle /lab mutt..!

I think it's insane.

The problem is stupid, irresponsible people have found a quick way to jump on the celebrity bandwagon and supply the (stupid) masses with the newest fad.

That fad being carrying around tiny dogs of whatever breed in purses.

Then, to make their 'products' more appealing, they slap FALSE claims on them, such as 'no shedding' and 'hypoallergenic'. Who falls for these claims? UNEDUCATED people who shouldn't be buying animals in the first place until they do research.

It all boils down to the almighty dollar. So long as stupid people are there to offer SUPPLY to the stupid people who have DEMAND, there'll continue to be a whole lot of stupid in this world---overpriced MUTTS is one of them.

Personally i think it is the breeders fault. All puppies are cute, it is not there fault they come from two differant parents and shouldn't be treated like crap just because of that...... but i do agree on the price factor.... they do cost way more then they should be.... I am all for pure breeds and wouldn't pay heaps for a cross breed, but i would adopt one if it needed a home and treat it just like i do my other dogs.

Yeah I think thats crazy myself. I personally think its cruel that people are "dying" for a dog, and are picky to the breed VS personality. So many dogs are put down due to lack of people giving them homes. People who want a High class breed are snobs looking for something else to show off!

ever since a few "celebrities" starting carrying small dogs around
then everybody has to do it
and all the backyard breeders are busy crossbreeding their
dogs and selling them to people who don't know any better and
pay lots of money for mutts

Some "designer breeds" such as Labradoodles and Golden-doodles were created to be service dogs for people in need of a service or companion animal who also suffer from allergies. This is because poodles are non-shedding and don't cause as many allergies although their temperaments are less ideal for service than labs or Golden Retrievers, hence the cross. So they were created to serve a specific need.

it's people trying to make money selling stuff we don't need - i think it started way back with bottled water and oxygen cans - people with too much money will buy anything!! (ps i like dogs - go to a rescue shelter to get a dog!)

have you seen these dogs? They are totally adorable and you can carry them around in your purse when you go out. The shelters don't usually have them. They are bred with very smart dogs such as poodles and most don't shed.
