I am considering joining the Air Force and I wanted to get the opinions of airmen. I heard how they take in to factor if you have a family. It's my husband and daughter with me and I want to make sure I won't be away from they too long.....Does the airforce really keep family in mind ...... are you ever deployed from them for long periods of time....

Air Force will not separate you from the family except when you are assigned in outlying stations like Iraq.

No they don't take into factor that u have a family. When it's time 4 u 2 deploy u go. Even if u r a single parent, it is your responsibility to have an alternate to care 4 your child. Besides it's not fare to single people to go fight the war. Good side- AF only goes 4 four mo. If u are a Police u go 4 six. and we only go once a year. U can volunteer and pic your time to go else you are on rotation. U will be safe behind the gate. hiding under your bed while the other Branches of military are fighting. We only order plane parts or fix planes, paperwork.

would you like an airman's wife's opinion, yours would probably like it. Right now with Iraq going on, I cant say about how long you will be gone, but having 3 different branches of the service amoung my relatives, and my husband retired Air Force, I have found out the Air Force is.. the best of all of them for keeping families together and a lot less TDY's that is temporary duty, not at the base your stationed at. Out of 20 yrs, my hus. was gone only 2 times for a year, and only 4-6 weeks a year at most for some of the others. Army never seemed to me to think much of families, and Navy was gone about 50% of the time.Mine was a crew chief and they were never stationed too close to the battles, the pilots always flew from somewhere in the area, but not too close.I liked that, didnt have to worry about him so much.

I'm in the US Air Force while my brother is serving in the US Marine Corps, and in comparison with some of my friends from other service branches (namely the US Army and the US Navy), the Air Force seems to be the most family oriented service branch.

[Gail C] above is pretty accurate in our unit rotation cycles and assignments. We don't get stuck out in the field for long periods of time in comparison to the other service branches. Still there are some risk involve, depending on what your MOS is and where it takes you to.

As a pilot, I don't really get any close calls at all, but still, we take all dangers and hazards out there seriously. Lots of things can still happen and 80% of all injuries and deaths are usually non-combat related. So, its more about keeping your eyes and ears open.

AF is the best for actually caring about families, versus saying they do. There are remote assignments of a year, might get one or two in a 20 year career, if you select your career field carefully. I was an Independent Duty Med Tech which guaranteed remotes. Be something generic like personnel or finance.
