Good wine always depends on the food its accompanied with. So here are some of my favorites.

Cono Sur (producer of the year in Chile 2005) Pinot Noir Chile. Reserva even better. Best wine made of the grape in the world with reasonable prizes. Smooth, elegant with white meat, smoked fish etc...
Kumala Shiraz-Cabernet Savingon Australia reasonable in price with red meat.
Robertson Shiraz South Africa strong full bodied with strong food peppered steaks etc..
Nippozano Italy good all around food wine,
Chasse (elg in label) South Africa very cheap red, very light best with no food or light snacks like sushi's

If you want to experience something really new, buy wines from Lebanon, the oldest wine making area in the world. Not many wines available, but all spicy and complex and very interesting. Their gem stone is Chateau Muzar, my favorite and worth its little bit higher price totally different red wine experience.

Being from Europa and expecting you to be from the States cant give a hint on exact price just price levels or availability.

Generally South African and Australian Shirazes are good. Chile good in Cabernet Savingon good price/value. Rioja wines from Spain and French usually overpriced, If you go to spanish wines go for Valdepenás area.

For reds I truly have continually loved the Italian wines of Tuscany. i'm a fan of any wines from Antinori, Banfi, Carpineto and DaVinci. I in elementary words drank reds till lately (very last 3 yrs). again my favorites come from Italy. almost any Pinot Grigio. I also am placing out to truly take excitement in ny State dry Rieslings. really Hosmer and Buttonwood Grove. all the above are regularly lower than $40.

One of my favorite wines is St. James Country red. I like a wine with a little sweetness and this has the right touch. The winery is located in St. James Missouri
If you live near by you should go to the Herman Festival in October and November. Missouri is a great place for wine touring.

The Rosemont Estates Shiraz is excellent, and only about $10 a bottle. Great with filet mignon!

The best cab out there is Opus One - we paid $150 a bottle, you could probably find it cheaper depending on the year. A lot of celebs will only drink this cabernet.

Banfi Rosa Regale nice slightly bubbly fruity red. I love this wine because, it tastes slightly like raspberries and the bubbles kind of make it dance around on your tongue. It makes my mouth very happy every time I drink it. It is also great with a nice bit of dark chocolate. Anything that goes that well with chocolate is for me.
