I'd say a quarter of the population but most people have more than 1 cat !!! I have 3 !!!

Read once that nobody 'owns' cats...on account of them taking their leave now and then and not returning 'home' until they've had their fill of freedom.
Also their independence can irk some of their 'owners' to mistreat or even kill them.

people don't own cats. the cats own them. they're not faithful like dogs. if you didn't feed and water them etc they would simply turn tail and disown you and find someone else who will pamper them.
