I'm not sure about illegal, but it's definately not very safe to be driving with your knees. I drive with one hand most of the time and I do just fine. Now if the other hand is holding a cell phone, then I would say that is kind of unsafe.

Driving like that comes with skill and experience. I drive like that too and it's because you have been driving for so many years, you naturally progress to a state of comfort driving. Using your knees to stable the wheel takes experience and using one hand on the steering wheel takes comfidence and experience too.

All I can say to you is to ask the cop who stops you for not having both hands on the wheel.
He/she may not like the idea and maybe it's the reason for stopping you and maybe not but just ask to make sure.
To many people do drive with only one hand on the wheel and all to many accidents happen from that too so it's all up to you.

I've never heard of any specific law regarding number of hands on the wheel. Using your knees isn't really a good long term approach to vehicle control, but one hand provides good control, unless the other is dialing a cell phone!!!

It's best to drive your car with both hands on the steering wheel
because you've better control of it especially when you're
driving fast on the highway. It's not illegal, but necessary.
