It can be hard when that's the way you're programmed, but with effort you can reprogram yourself to think positively. There are countless books on positive thinking, self-esteem & overcoming the negative. Reading them may help if you actually follow what they say. (My problem was that I'd read them & think "Oh that's nice, so I could change my whole life & be happy" but then I'd close the book & not do anything it said because it's easier to stay negative!) The key is to catch yourself in a negative thought & say "Stop it!" & turn it around to the positive.

A lot of negative thinking comes from our parents & how we were raised. I know my negative voice is pretty much my controlling, critical mother nagging in my head. It's hard to ignore a voice that's always been there & become such a part of who I am.

You have to find your positive voice (it may be really quiet & hard to hear). Sometimes if you just take the negative thought & turn it into its opposite & say that out loud, even if you don't believe it, it helps. Start saying positive affirmations.

"I am beautiful & happy & life is wonderful..." or whatever.

It's like forcing a smile will actually make you feel a bit better. Sounds silly but it works. Good luck!

Please note that negative thinking is common and experienced by all at all times. So do not worry. A thinking is negative or poaitive only according to the state of your mind at that time and the values by which you have been brought up.The negative thinking is also a part of your thinking process.
Some of the negative thinkings may seem tobe a positive thinking later, if you look back after sometime.
Hence enjoy the negative thinking also. If you try to avoid the same will crop up again and again and occupy all your mind. Hence do not worry. Alternatively you can think of meditation.

by thinking positively!!! But also, there is something I learned, that negative or upsetting thoughts give you anxiety or depression or both, so best not to think negatively. Also it is best not to think of your past or your future, concentrate on "now". What ever activity you do, concentrate fully on it, and if any thought comes into your head about the past or the future, you say to your self: IT ISN'T HAPPENING NOW!!"
I do this myself every day for a few month now and it has relaxed me and helped me. But another part to this is meditation, it is simple. You think of each body part from head to toe and as you think it in your mind, lying down on couch or bed with your eyes shut, breathe deeply after naming the body part, eventually you will get so good at it that you will be able to relax muscles and feel better. This way you only think of the present, one day at a time, no stress from the past or the future. This has helped me greatly, I hope it helps you too. Maybe a hobby would help as well, something you enjoy doing, and going for walks.

You need to recognize at what times, how often, and what formula you use for negative thinking.

Anyone can tell you: be positive! But that's rubbish if you don't catch 90% of the negative thoughts you go through.

So the first step is to actively listen to your own thoughts. Keep a tally. Carry around a scrap piece of paper and a pencil. For every negative thought, mark down a tally point.

Do this for a few days until you're able to spot the conditions that lead to negative thinking.

Then, add on the recognition of POSITIVE thinking. For every negative tally, force yourself to spin that situation three different ways. It's not easy . . . and it doesn't have to be "valid" ways -- they can be funny, lame, or ridiculous. . .

ie. Your dog dies, God forbid. You think, "I'm never going to be happy again."

Spin it: At least Fido is out of pain. Fido didn't like this new diet food, anyway. He had a good life.

ie. Car breaks down five minutes before you're late for work. Then you're ticketed. It begins to rain. Your cell phone battery dies.

Spin it: At least I can use my creativity and think of how I'll get out of this one. My car DID need rinsed off. Maybe some lovely lady will offer me a ride because she thinks my butt looks cute.

Eventually, you'll automatically be looking for ways to spin bad situations into good ones.

Practice thinking positive thoughts. Practice the basic meditation technique of noticing your breath, in, out, and try to bring your thoughts back to your breathing. Once you start to get the hang of it with the breathing, add a thought to the breathing, something simple, like I'm OK or Life's Good or Be Happy and try that.

And, in general, think about things that you need to do or are practical and make sure you reflect on what you have gotten done to find some satisfaction from the doing and the result.

Get the book. "You Can Be Happy No Matter What - Five Principles For Keeping Life In Perspective", by Richard Carlson, Ph.D.

The book has some repetitive parts to it, but you can take the docs advise for what it's worth and apply it to your own life. I read it and do not think it is life changing, however I do feel that it has helped me to better understand certain things in life.

Replace your negative thought by postive thought.
Example if you do not like your boss. Then replace it by saying, I like my boss.
