I LOVE Absinthe. So if you ask me... yes the price is worth it!

I think what makes Absinthe so attractive, at least to me, is the whole ritual that is involved in making the drink. The magical louche of the absinthe changing it from a clear green to a milky white is just plain cool. I also love all the gadgets. I have the fountain, the slotted spoons and a set of really cool Absinthe glasses that have a glass bowl in the bottom for the absinthe to be poured.

It is a fun experience. Friends like it.... and for a few hours you can be a bohemian. It is definitely a conversation piece. Absinthe makes me warm and fuzzy and I always notice the perma-grin.

I have not seen the green fairy yet.... but I certainly will keep trying.

There is a short history followed by photos of the drink being prepared (and photos of it turning green to white) in the traditional way here: http://www.recipezaar.com/bb/viewtopic.z...

Like most things... there is good absinthe and there is bad absinthe. For a true experience stay away from the gimmicks... there are many out there. Do not buy a bottle based on the amount of wormwood or your experience will not be tasty. Also the stuff sold here in the US is NOT real absinthe. You will have to order it on the net. The good ones are expensive.... I try to buy two bottles when I order.... one to drink and one to keep.

Real absinthe is bottled at around 55-75% alcohol. It also has a number of herbs in it, including wormwood whose compoent "thujone" is what makes it illegal in a number of countries. Believed to be hallucinogenic and highly addicitive and contributing to dementia, absinthe was made illegal. The truth is that all the effects attributed to absinthe were the same attributed to alcoholism. Absinthe wound up as a convenient scapegoat. A few countries have repealed the ban on absinthe recently.
Absinthe has a strong flavor of anise and liquorice root. If you don't like black liquorice, you won't like the flavor of absinthe. Generally the high price has more to do with the small-scale production, it's alcohol content, and the novelty factor that it's illegal so many places. Shipping from Europe adds to the cost as well. While illegal to sell in the US, it's not illegal to posses, and you can order from a number of locations online with high degrees of success. Common places of origin are Switzerland, France, and the Czech Republic. There are stories of online orders being seized at customs and never reaching their destination. Everybody I've personally known who have ordered have gotten theirs with no problem. I have no firsthand experience with an order being confiscated.

Czech republic has the cheapest and best absinth in the world.

The traditional way of drinking it is to poor it in to glass, take a cube of sugar and infiltrate it wit absinth, then on metal spoon (on top of glass to prevent spills) light the sugar cube and once its burned and melted mix it with the drink. I think absinth is nowadays allowed across Europe.

Used to be the drink of artists Vincent van Gogh and so

yes, i have and it is unlike just getting drunk, just dont drink too much too fast because the proof is really high, it is illegal in the united states so if you plan on drinking it go to spain, they have the best absinthe there, (it has never been illegal there) but if you try to order and have it mailed to the united states, you would most likely never get it, since it will be seized. hope this helps by the way check this out you will probably like it, you seem to drink

oh yeahhh the price you pay will be worth it. just so you know absinthe is distilled from wormwood extract and that extract has hallucinogenic properties if you indulge toooooo much. so if you drink in moderation( 3-5 shots pers session) you will be high as a kite anymore than that-- will send you to lala land. a full bottle over an 8 hour period you will not remember athing for a day or so

It will get you drunk.

If you buy a good brand it will have an anise flavor and is quite good (if you like anise of course). If you buy a bad brand it will taste like crap and you will hate it.
Any absinthe that doesn't taste like anise is not really absinthe.

(stay away from anything that markets using "thujone" levels or claims of hallucinations, it's all BS and bad tasting products).

I had some, and it was great. But not the taste. I was laughing most of the night. Its a good drunk. And my bottle was close to $300. I say not worth it again, but I had to try it.
