All schools are different, based on "staff development" days and whatnot. Unless a holiday is considered a national holiday, most schools vary for their days off. Most places (and schools) will be open on Columbus Day. Unless your school has a staff development day on Monday, I'm pretty sure your school will be open.

I live in Southern California (LA area) and most schools are open. Sorry. Places to be closed for Columbus day are banks and such.

My younger brother still has to go to school, but my best friend Rachel doesn't, so I can't really give you a straight answer.
