You know you've gotten the daylights beat out of you when you have stars or little birds circling your head.

You know you've had the daylights beaten out of you when you are awake and aware of what is going on around you and the the next thing you remember is waking up either in the dark or waking up period...day or night. It's the idea of "waking up" that should give you the clue.

daylights are usually understood to be consciousness. If you were dropped and your lights wnet out that is when you had it done.
