Hi, I really want to hit the gym and improve my body but I am afraid that I will slip into unhealthy body weight if I start excercising. I am 26, 166cm (66inch) 45-47kg (110 pounds) and my BMI on the lower edge or outside the table at all. I want to get more active, start running, get some muscles. Most importantly, I want to get a flat muscly belly and toned nice bottom and tighs.
Any help please? Most info out there is for people trying to lose weight. I really need advice. Should I run? Should I not? Should I just do some machines? Which ones? (I eat normal, no restrictions, my stomach is flat and I have no excess fat but I am not toned.)

Running is good because it's aerobic, and aerobics are for heart health, not just weight loss. I'm thin as well and I hit the gym and run 5 miles every nite and I don't lose weight. You just have to make sure you're getting enough calories.
As far as weight training goes, use the machines and start with lighter weights and move up. If you start to run, you'll notice a HUGE difference in your legs, esp. if you kick up the incline a little. So with the weight machines, if you're running, focus more on arms and let your leg muscles develop with running. Trust me, they will.
I would recommend doing some lat pull-downs, chest presses, and bicep and tricep curls at the gym. I'm pretty toned and that's pretty much all I do. It works all the muscles. Occasionally (two or three times a week) I'll use free weights at home for my arms and to add weight to squats.
If you follow this program you'll notice a big difference in not a lot of time.

You go to gym and want to be active is a great start.
Doing exercise is not only for appearance, it's also for your health. Thin people don't know mean they are healthy.
When you do cardio, you get your heart muscle worked out; you'll have a stronger heart. When you lift weight you gain muscle, you will have less fat and your whole body situation will be better. You will have less chance to get high blood pressure, heart attach or diabetes.
The best way to get toned is to do the weight at least three times a week, try to develop your muscles in balanced way, find a knowledgeable trainer to help you set up some program. Eat health. You will get into a great shape.

Hit the gym!!! 3-4 times a week and focus on technique and not so much heavy weight lifting. Work the muscle, feed the muscle, and rest the muscle and you will be toned up in less then a month. You have the motivation, now you have to get to the gym and make the choice to do something about it.....Good Luck, you're on your way to a toner body..

Exercise doesn't necessarily mean that you'll lose weight, particularly if you start out skinny. You'll build up muscle mass, which is denser than fat, so you may even add weight. Of course, the muscle will also help you burn calories faster.

Weight gain/loss is pretty much dependent on calories in/out. If you're worried about losing too much weight, just eat more calories. Your exercise regimen may well increase your appetite anyway.

Go to a gym and talk to a personal trainer, you should get good advice that way.

I'm sure you've heard it before, but I'll say it again: consult a doctor before starting a workout routine.
but, from the sound of your question, I don't think you have to worry about working out. make sure you watch your diet though--you need to eat enough. protein builds muscle, but you can't be healthy on just that. luckily there are lots of different training books out there to help you (an easy one to try: pick up a runners world magazine--they have lot's of helpful articles)
make sure you try a variety of exercises too. If you are a light weight, then weight training might be good for you, but if you really want to shape up and get tone, definitely throw in some cardio, like running.
Check out your doctor, the library and the web

if you go to a gym, they will probably have personal trainers you can talk to too
good luck!

Two words: Free weights.

For the belly, an exercise called V-tap is very good. Sit on the floor with your feet and torso elevated, like a V. Get a medicine ball or weight plate and "tap" them on both sides, alternating.

if you belong to a gym there should be someone there to advise you. Also it's always a good idea to see a doctor before beginning such a regimen. You need healthy foods for calories and muscle. No junk foods or sugary drinks.
