Above all, they are there to make sure that the wedding day goes smoothly. Things always go wrong at weddings, and they are there to make sure that things are fixed before the bride finds out!

Also, they help the bride get ready. They help her dress, put on makeup, etc. Also, they do silly things like hold the bride's purse for her.

They are the bride's support group, and the Maid of Honour is their leader!

Historically, bridesmaids were used as decoys for the bride. Back when countries and tribes were constantly at war bridenapping was a big problem. So bridesmaids dressed alike and walked around the bride so that warriors could not distinguish who the bride was. Thus preventing her from being kidnapped. Now bridesmaids are supposed to represent people who support the union of the two people getting married. They are there to provide support in any way to the bride and groom.

In Australia & probably most other western countries - you do not actually have to have bridesmaids/groomsmen as such.
you just have to have 2 people over the age of 18 ( that will vary depending on country) to witness the wedding.

As other people have said the 'tradition' of the bridesmaids was as a decoy to protect the bride.

Originally, the job of the bridesmaids was to be body guards or decoys for the bride.

Now a days, it is their responsability to do everything with in their power to make the brides day less stressful, and if possible, to go off with out a hitch.

Friends acting as servents, to make the bride look important and be helped where she needed, like dressing up ETC.
Brides maids are not paid for the service either.

They are NOT slaves to the bride! I am a bride and my maids are my friends that are just as excited about my wedding. We get together and make favors, write out invitations and drink mimosas, go shopping for wedding stuff. They are going to help me with my hair and makeup, they are going to prepare my emergency kit and make sure my dress gets to the cleaners. They are there to help with the plans and be moral supprt when needed. There are responsibilities involved but for me its more about the bonding and knowing I have friends great enough to support me when I need it. I am going to get them really nice thank you gifts.

It's just a way of having friends and family near you when you marry. It is an honor to be in a wedding, especially for the maid of honor and the best man.

SUPPORT!! My bridesmaids have helped in every aspect of planning my wedding. From the dress to the flowers and the simplest thing as carpet and location. They have given more objection then my husband to be. He says whatever honey as long as you are happy me and the boys will show up. Tell me who needs to be where. Kind of nice I guess.
