We just got an espresso machine, but it didn't come with one of those little metal cups to froth the milk in. The instructions say it's best if you get one, but we can't find one. Can I just use a normal cup or mug or something?

it's ok to use a mug but use one a size bigger than your serving requirement, or at least a size that will allow you to keep the milk in while giving you enough froth to skim off. at the start, i actually used a big measuring cup: transparent, with handle, could hold hot and cold (it will get hot as you steam).

this might help, too: http://www.coffeegeek.com/guides/frothingguide

enjoy!

Because the hot steam used to froth the milk is SO hot, and comes out at such a high pressure, it's really not a good idea to use anything but a metal jug. Here's a tip for you, and also another reason for using a metal jug: The milk will only froth properly if it's icy cold first. You want to put the jug right up so the nozzle goes down to the bottom of the jug, then move it up and down a bit for a few seconds to make a few bubbles on the surface, before returning it to its original position, then, swirling the jug gently, occasionally wait for the milk to expand, turning the steam off very quickly before the milk goes over the edge. Also, don't remove the jug whilst the steam's coming out, or you'll burn yourself. You can buy those jugs at any good coffee shop, or a Whittards.

Any mug will work but metal is best. To get the best froth always make sure the milk is very cold and most important that is is full fat. the skimmed or semiskimmed with the fat taken out just do not froth in the same way

Of course you can use a cup or mug. I know where you can find a frother, though. I don't know what part of the country you live in, but I am from Jersey. We have Boscov's & I just bought one there last week. Macy's will have them, also. If you live in Florida, Burdines will have them. Chicago, probaby Marshall Fields. Usually the mall has a coffee specialty shop where you can go get your specially brewed coffee & they usually sell them. Try the Coffee Beanery. We have one in our mall. When I lived in Florida and went to the Boynton Beach Mall down there I always got a cup of coffee from Barney's, a very nice specialty shop where you can find this item along with many other similar items, including the coffee, itself. You might find this item in Sears or Penneys, in their 'home goods section'. I kept running down to Boscov's to purchase one & they would always be out of them. These are popular items & they sell out fast, so you can call the store first & see if they have it in stock. The employees will be glad to you let you know if they have any on the shelf. Enjoy your espresso. I enjoy a cup everyday.

You can use a mug, or actually a simple cup. even the cup you finally got the coffee served. But consider milk will triplicate its volume during the process. You also need to use thick whole milk in order to get better results.

Hope it helps.

A mug is fine if you want to do single-servings. If you want to make double batches or are doing larger lattes, use a big measuring cup.
