Go to this website to learn all about purchasing a quality piece of jewelery. http://www.americusdiamond.com/

First thing, DO NOT GO TO A MALL!!! The markup is rediculously high and you will pay way more than the ring is actually worth. Find a good reputable jeweler in your area with extensive knowledge. Mine was purchased at a Samuel's location NOT in the mall. Do your research too and it can save you a bundle. most guys only know about size, but there are many other things to consider too. The clarity, are there any cracks? Color, is it white or yellow? Round cuts are the most expensive cuts and square (princess) is one of the less expensive. Also consider the band, gold, white gold (plated yellow gold) platinum?

Also maek sure you get a certified diamond from one of the major institutes. The best way to purchase a ring is too choose the setting and buy a LOOSE diamond to set in. Often times you cant see the imperfections in rings that are premade.

I'm not saying you have to get the best out there and spend 10,000 dollars but you want the best ring for what you can afford. My ring was 3,300 and its gorgeous. Its a white gold band with 76 pave set diamonds and center square cut stone of 3/4 carat. The "standard" to spend is two months salary and many jewelers have financing options available. Also buy insurance on the ring one you purchase it. I know its a lot but think about it. Good luck.

Check the yellow pages for jewelry stores. Visit both the large, chain ones and the small, locally owned ones. It doesn't hurt to try pawn shops too. The ring can run anywhere from around $300 to tens of thousands, if you're going for diamonds specifically.

Make sure you are more interested in finding something she will love than getting a good deal. You can always haggle or buy on credit. It is most important that she loves the ring--she does have to wear it forever, after all!

An interesting idea is to buy a band that has diamonds and other stones on it (sapphires, aquamarines). My boyfriend bought me a ring with a bit aquamarine stone and diamonds on the outside and I love it! Diamond rings are $100+ but a good quality rings start at around $500.

You can get a microscopic chip of a diamond for roughly $100. If you want something bigger, expect to pay into the upper hundreds and low thousands.

Most malls have jewelry stores. Walmart even has some really nice rings but most are cubic zirconia (most people hate them because they aren't real diamonds but IMO they are nicer and sparklier than any diamond, but to each their own).

My husband bought me a Sapphire for my engagement ring. It means love and loyalty. I had a friend that bought his girlfriend an Emerald because he asked her to marry him in March.

Diamonds are expensive, even for the smaller ones. You can get a much larger stone in one of the other precious or semi precious stones for just a fraction of the cost I don't care what anyone says, girls love to show off their rings and this is one time that SIZE DOES MATTER). Some people do not like diamonds because of all of the deaths of adults and children that have been caused by their harvesting.

Find out what her favorite stone is or what the meanings of the different colored stones are and buy one of those. Chances are none of her other friends will have one like it.

The popular school of thought is that the cost of the ring should equal three months total of your earnings, but if you can save, save. Different cuts of the stone will also impact the cost: round(the least expensive), emerald cut, princess cut, etc. Pawn shops can save you pennies on the dollar or you can check for estate sales and auctions on the web.

This web page will explain all of the different stone cuts to you:

Here are some websites that will tell you what each different color of stone means. The last one is probably the best.

My husband bought my engagement ring at Zales. I always love everything I have ever bought from there. He got a 7/8 of a carat with really great quality, color, and clarity for $2500.

are you proposing? depends on what your budget is...and from what state are you from? If you buy a diamond ring, it has to have a certificate coming from the jewelry store. Try looking online.
