I found this article quite amusing.
Is marriage strengthened by mutual faith in God? Are marriages weak without religion? The Barna Research Group conducted a poll of Americans in 1999 in an attempt to show that religious faith reduces the likelihood of divorce. The results shocked them: Atheists had the lowest average divorce rates (defined as the percentage of people who had been divorced at least once in their lives), at 21%. Christian divorce rates averaged about 24% (higher for "born-again" Christians, ie- fundamentalists, at 27%), and even higher for Jews, at 30%. They also collected racial and geographical data, which showed that the white Southern Baptist fundamentalists have no reason to crow about their "family values". Not only did the Southern Bible Belt have the highest divorce rate in the country, but whites as a race are the most likely to split: 27%, as compared to 22% for blacks, 20% for Hispanics, and only 8% for Asians like me

(and you thought I was just blowing hot air about that "till death do us part" stuff). UPDATE: interestingly enough, Barna Research later edited that article to lump all "non-born-again adults" into a single category, thus "accidentally" obscuring the embarrassing fact that atheists had the lowest divorce rates."

Why do you think that is?

iluvhipos, you've won the prize for the most small minded and ignorant answer on today's forum. I don't think even your fellow Christians would agree with you on that.

Faith, it's a percentage, therefore it doesn't matter how many Atheists there are. With your logic, their divorce rate would've been higher since there aren't as many Atheists. If there were 50 divorced Atheists out of 100 and 50 divorced Christians out of 500, Atheists would be at 50% percent while Christians would be at 10%. Faith, you make no sense.

Wow, only six answers in more than half an hour? Usually if the word Atheist is in the title question, bigots swarm in right and left. I wonder what's different here...

I think that's an interesting statistic. Personally, while I find that having the same beliefs as your partner is an asset (my husand and I are both Wiccan), I think that marriage has just as much to do with learning how to get along with another person, the give and take of every day life. I'm not sure if the religions themselves (or lack thereof) are so much a factor as being supportive to each other no matter what each person thinks and believes.

I know one thing though--there's no WAY I would want to behave these days the way that the Old Testament describes a "good" wife should behave. I think that attitudes like that in that book was what got me started on my path away from all that. Men and women should be equal in marriage. If there is no balance, no partnership, I think that things are much more likely to fall apart under stress. A well made foundation to a building makes that building that much more likely to remain standing through the hard times.

The historic previous of ways Christianity started may be the genetic fallacy. whether the international is extra suitable with or without faith is undesirable for a number of motives: a million) we don't understand precisely what it may be like without faith (until eventually you prefer to apply Stalin's Russia as an occasion), so we can not easily study without severe conjecture, and 2) It has no bearing on the certainty claims of religion itself. One can not choose a philosophy by the movements of its adherents. This, too, could probably bring about a logical fallacy if argued the two way. 3) As one answerer stated, examine the form of those that faith has killed. yet it quite is a a million/2-certainty and an fool's errand. what share did Stalin, Polpot, and Mao kill interior the call of Godlessness? back, you may not choose a philosophy by its adherents. Her argument quantities to a thinly veiled advert hominem and has no weight in an clever communicate. i could circumvent the two considered one of those matters and concentration on the classical arguments of God's existence and the arguments against. The argument from morality. The teleological argument for God's existence. The ontological argument (a thoughts bender there). The kalam cosmological argument. each and every of those has had volumes written approximately them by Christians and atheists alike, and those are the long-status arguments precisely because of the fact they are nicely concept out, and jointly as no longer conclusive, are actually not riddled with fallacies, that's the purpose of a debate.

For the incompetent person who posted that Atheists can't really be married. News flash if that was the case then the laws would prevent anyone who don't believe in your god from getting married! I suggest you educated your self before posting such non-sense.

It don't surprise me any that Atheists would have a lower divorce rate. That is pure common sense to me. Thanks for sharing that information with me! :-)

Since there are far more religious people than atheists in the US, something like 91 percent have some sort of religious affiliation, it’s hardly surprising that you would find far more divorce among religious people. You would probably find far more of anything you researched.
