When in doubt, ALWAYS take your cat to your vet.
You can always call your vet and discuss it with them, first.

Kittens open their eyes at 10 days old and start to crawl around. At that age, healthy kittens have a fat tummy, and begin to learn to purr.
A sick kitten will be weak, often thin, often cry constantly, will not be able to nurse well, may be stained with fecal matter...
This doesn't mean your kitten is perfectly healthy, because there are things any kitten can have that don't show, just like people BUT if your kitten is doing all the healthy kitten things- eating, growing, learning and mom seems ok, then most likely hes fine.
A trip to the vet is never a bad idea.

Are there reasons for you to believe it is sick? One dying does not mean the other can't be healthy. I picked up a stray dog that had nine pups and one died and two were disabled but the rest were fine. If the kitten is eating and the mom is not turning her back on it then most likely it is fine.
You should take the kitten to the vet at six weeks for a checkup...take mom to. And make sure you make an appointment to get mom fixed.

At a week old, I doubt your kittens eyes are open and even newborns crawl around.
If the mom is nursing regularly the kitten should be content and not crying. Kittens can die very suddenly, it's like sudden infant death syndrome in kittens. Only time will tell if you have a healthy kitten. If it's putting on weight and getting mom's milk and you have it vaccinated by 8 weeks, it should have a good start at being healthy.

I hope you have a vet. Call and make an appointment for the kitten and mom. Then get them both spayed or neutered. There are too many unwanted kittens in the world. It is a horrible situation where these little puppies and kittens are left to starve to death.

What would make you think it is unhealthy? If it is showing signs of sickness then take it to a vet. If you just don't know what to expect do a little internet research on kittens so you can compare your new kittens behavior to a "normal" kitten.

You haven't given any information that would lead us to believe it is NOT healthy. Because one died doesn't mean there's anything wrong with the other. You can bring it to the vet, of course. Or if you have any farm people around, they'll know what to look for.

You don't give enough detail, but if the kitten has watery eyes and a runny nose, then it is sick, but if it is moving around fine, then "i wouldn't worry to much if i were you.
good luck

I'm guessing that if your kitten is eating fine and being perky than you are fine. Just because your other kitty died doesnt mean that this one will too sometimes things just happen.
