I've been told that our CDs and DVDs have different codes or something in them and they're not compatible with any British DVD or CD players. Is that true?

My friend lives in the UK and I wanted to buy him this certain CD, but it's not going to work on his stereo?

Audio CD Work Universally!
DVD are Encode with Region Codes!(The UK is Region 2) ,The U.S. is Region 1.
Most U.K. DVD Players can be re-tasked with a 'CRACK' or A Code that YOU can programme in to allow it to play ALL REGIONS.
However some U.K. DVD Players come already made to play Multi Region out of the Box-so you can Plug and Play.

J Charles is right, CDs will work in both countries. I have both British and American CDs in my possession that I have used in both countries.

DVDs have a special form of coding designed so that companies can rip you off and charge more for an item in one country than another, or allow a movie to be released in one country or not another. America is region one and UK is region 2. There are six regions world wide.

Since Brits like to watch American movies many UK DVD players are capable of reading any region of DVD.

OK

The people above are right but there is another difference you shoud be aware of.

The Television standards here are also different.
In the US and Canada (and some other countries) your broadcast standard is NTSC, whereas in the UK the PAL system us used.
While most DVD players can manage this some televisions are unable to which means you would get poorer quality and possible very poor color.

Find a Free DVD (I'm sure Disney will send you one for their theme parks) and send it to your friend to test.

(The VHS format difference is also NTSC vs PAL)

I believe that our CDs work, as I just sent someone a CD there recently that worked fine. But their DVDs might be different, and I know their VCR tapes are different.
