why would you be sooo selfish as to break up with someone over the phone...i mean unless there is no other possible way, i think everyone deserves a face to face......but bottom line is you should be honest and upfront in a tactful way about your feelings. Dont put them on the defensive, by saying things like you did this, you didnt do that, blah blah blah, they start to put their guard up and stop listening to what you say/feel. But bottom line.....you dont want to be in the relationship anymore and you tell them why.....simple enough.

Never break up with someone over the phone. At least have the courtesy to buy them lunch or something. Seriously, do not break up with them on the phone. That is like, the biggest slap in the face. Remember, at one point, you cared about this person.

seriously though, imagine how you would feel if you just got a text or email to dump you. There are kinder ways.

If you cant do that face to face, at least give them a call.
draft some notes if it helps, but its better on both of you if you say something nice and wish them well

here's something id recommend to a college student, but it works if you are struggling with this

1. Get alone with him/her. Don't do this on the phone!
2. Relax. You are doing the right thing...s/he needs to know the truth.
3. Tell him/her that you feel this relationship on its current level needs to end.
4. Give him/her some time to let it sink in.
5. If s/he tries to convince you to give him/her another chance, listen to him/her.
6. Tell him/her that you've made up your mind.
7. Tell him/her at what level you would like to keep your relationship (acquaintances, never-seens, friends, etc).
8. Listen to his/her response. Respect his/her feelings about this new level
9. Let him/her go when s/he feels s/he needs to end the conversation.
