Don't get a cone!!! So difficult for the dog.

My vet gave me some cream (can't remember name) and told me to put it on and around the stiches. The dog would hate the taste. It totally worked. My dog took one lick, made a face, drank a bunch of water, and never touched her stiches again. Course I reapplied it daily. It cost about 10 bucks, the same as a cone, and is much easier for the animal.

OR my friend's vet had her put a t-shirt/tank top and boxers on her dog after surgery. Make sure they're loose enough to be comfy yet cover the wound. Both of our dogs are larger animals and can wear adult size clothes with the waistband knotted and the bottom of the shirt knotted so they don't trip. If you have a smaller dog, check out baby/children's clothing. If you can't use shorts w/ an open fly or the fly isn't large enough, then cut out a hole in the back for their tail to stick out of and large enough so they can relieve themselves (you know what I mean) but not get at the wound. It totally worked. Quick note, I think it would be harder for this to work w/ a boy dog but works great w/ girl dogs.

Yes the dog looked funny walking around in human clothes, but it's better than wearing that horrible cone.

I had my toy Chi Poo (part Chihuahua and part Poodle) spayed about 3 months ago. She wouldn't leave her stitches alone either. I guess they pulled on her and itched as the incision was healing. I could have gotten the cone collar for her, but I didn't. I called my vet and she said to put some roll on deodorant ( not the spray or the waxy kind) around the incision. She said the taste would deter her from licking and biting it. It worked like a charm and she healed just fine.

Go to the pet store and get her an inflatable collar - looks and blows up like a small vinyl ring for the pool. The dog can't move her neck to reach her butt and they're more comfortable than the cones. Some dogs manage to destroy the cones, they can't reach these unless they puncture them with VERY sharp back claws, and I never heard of that happening.

If it has been more than three days since the spay she should be ok, If not use an ace bandage and tie it around her with the knot of the bandage close to her back. This should keep her from chewing those stiches. They get itchy when they heal just like they do on us. Great choice to SPAY and NEUTER!

Call your local Vet, they should be able to let you borrow a cone to put aroung her head to keep her from chewing. If they get ripped out, she will probably have to have staples put in as a replacement. Depending on her size, you can put either a sock around her waist, or a shirt, or something to cover up the are for a few days.

First, check to see if the wound itself is red or inflamed and causing the irritation. If it all looks healthy, then the elizabethan collar, or the cut down bucket attached to her collar, will be the thing.

Do a check around her bedding, is it that that is tickling her shaved tummy/side (wherever they made the incision, it does vary with vets). Has she been deflead lately, there may be fleas around that are also tickling her.

Good luck with her and thanks for being a responsiblel pet owner

I'm just kinda brainstorming here. But try spraying a tiny TINY bit of bitterspray on his cut. Plus the Cone never hurts. Wish you the best of luck.

PS: you could also wrap around some bandage.

Had a friend who's dog did this. It had to go back to vet & get new stitches the next day.
Most vets sale CONE COLLARS or get one from PET-smart. Be sure to carry her w/u & size her kneck.

when i got my dog spayed the vet told me that if she starts to touch her stiches try either putting women's deordorant around the stitches and if that doesn't work buy a small baby's shirt and put it on her like pants so that she can't touch the sutures.

Make an elizabeth collar which goes over her head. Cut the end off of a bucket and secure to her collar. The roundness of the bucket will still allow her to eat and drink but the length of it will prevent her from reaching her stiches to lick and scratch them.
