We discovered my 18 month daughter is allergic to penicillin after the 3rd dose. The allergist says he could test her, only there is a shortage of the test material, and we are now on a waiting list, he says not to hope for a call for the next 2 years... He says also that this allergy sometimes disappears with age

On your first dose of Penicillin.
Usually a doctor will ask you if you are allergic to Penicillin before prescribing anything containing penicillin. If you don't know your Penicillin-allergy status, then a GP would safely find it out by giving you a very little dose of Penicillin subcutaneously (just under your skin). If you do react than it will mean you are allergic to Penicillin. Your reaction will be localised just on that skin area and will not be harmfull to you.

I remember my dad found out he was allergic to penicillin when I was a little girl...he must have been in his late 20's. Was never allergic to it before that. He reacted within minutes of taking the drug...his face welled up pretty bad and he had to go to the hospital.

usually with the first dose in that person's life, they will know within 30 minutes to an hour. That's why many doctors have you stay for an hour at their office if they gave you a penicillin shot. The doctor wants to make sure you have no allergic reaction.

I was fine with penicillan for 26 years of my life then suddenly all hell broke loose after a course for a ear infection. The symptoms started 7 days after I took the last pill. I was so ill I nearly died and now have to wear a medic bracelet. In my 26 years I must have had it 2-3 times every year plus with 5 pregnanies I had large shots whilst in labour. The allergy can come on at any point in your life usually after you have used it a few times.

If someone has an allergy to penicillin, they may brake out in a rash, or the medicine doesn't work.

I started having allergic reactions to one of the "cillin" antibiotics as an adult. They were pretty severe, so I went to an allergy clinic.
They told me I had an unusually bad allergy to any kind of yeast including the "cillins", fermented foods and drinks, vinegars, wine, beer, mushrooms, etc.
My body was full of yeast, and sugar was harmful also as it helps yeast grow.
I cut way down on all of that stuff and also started eating yogurt. What a difference it made on my health in general.
This site explains more, as do many others:

I am allergic to it. I was about 6 or 7 and got tons of canker sores on the inside of my mouth. I have never tried it again since!
