I'm in a religions class and my teacher told me that there are accenptable reasons or cirmumstances for a Muslim to never make the trip to Mecca during their life time. I'm curious as to what some of those reasons could be.

In Islam, it is considered an obligation to make the pilgrimage to Mecca at least once during one's life, as you have learned in your class. And yes, there are conditions that are acceptable which may prevent one from performing this duty. When one is extrememly ill and too poor to make the travel are the two most likely and common reasons to not attend to this. In addition, they will not be required to go if the pilgrimage will cause a hardship on their family. It should be noted that for those unable to make the trip, they are allowed to ahve someone else attend in their place.

The Hajj is the 5th pillar or Islam. A Muslim is required to perform this pilgrimage once in a lifetime. A Muslim is excused for poverty or for disability. The Hajj, if properly performed, is said to cleanse the pilgrim/observer of all past sin. That is why it is also taught that if one died during the Hajj they are certain to go to paradise. I can't find any other exceptions that release a Muslim from this reigious requirement.

I'm sure you could get more detailed information from a Muslim.

I think the following is correct: Non-muslims are not allowed in Mecca. A religion that discriminates is a bad religion.
