of a cross and a line of Scripture would be bad because it is defacing the human body. Well how about women with their pierced ears or even fasting for long periods of time--that's not very healthy but I have read comments on this site where people thought that was a marvolous thing to do. What gives?

I would also be willing to bet there are an awful lot of WWII vets out there (well not so much anymore) that have a tattoo or two probably just about everybody's Grandpa or Dad did and we loved them and thought they were really something--My Dad anyway.

I don't know how old you are, but I know many people that have major regrets about getting their tatoos. I work with Veterans and many of them just shake their heads. I have women friends that really regret the ones on their chest area and legs.
If you're wondering about it as a Christian, then pray about it. God will give you an answer. Search your heart why you want it. Do you want to "tell" other people you're a Christian? Is it kind of like putting a fish on your car? Is a tatoo just like a bumper sticker on a car, only you never get to take it off? and you never get to "get a new car with no bumper stickers".
A lot of people want to appear "edgy". They want non-believers to think they are a "cool" Christian. Search you heart and ask yourself if it will help your witness as a Christian. What would Jesus do? What would Jesus think? Would He be happy about it?
Also, as far as scripture is concerned, you can't just look at one scripture without another to back it up. The Bible is made to have the answer be verified in a couple places. You know that bond servants had their ear pierced when they belonged to someone. So a bond servant of Jesus could have his ear pierced, but doesn't have to. I would personally not get the tatoo. When/if you become ill and have an MRI, it will be very painful and may mask something that is near the tatoo. The iron in the dye will be "magnetized" during an MRI, so sometimes they can't even do them.

Actually, many of the older veterans have naked ladies tatooed on their arms and most of them regret that.

It's very much a question of taste. The fact that a tatoo is pretty well permanent, (it is very complicated and painful to undo a tattoo) makes it unwise to go into that too quickly. Personally I don't think it is sinful to have a tattoo, although I can understand the 'defacing the body' argument. It does have much more impactg than piercing, and it is more permanent. (Of course some parts are really not recommended for piercing).
As far as fasting is concerned, a person can fast in the proper way without really doning himself any harm. In fact it can be good for your health. Also, fasting has (or can have) a spiritual purpose, I would have trouble identifying the spiritual purpouse in tattooing.
So while I agree it is not necessarily a sin to have a tatoo, neither would I put them on the same level as piercing and fasting.

What you are talking about are cultural differences about the art of tattoo. Depending on the area, views will differ, and sometimes greatly, ranging from it being purely an art or body modification to a virtual taboo, to others being a mark of pride.

Best thing you can do is simply look at yourself and decide how you would feel about it, and hopefully at least try to respect those who have tattoos. For some of those people, it is a method of expressing themselves, much as one would with clothing and jewelry, or through the various arts.

Just one more example showing my organized religion is flawed. The concept of sin was invented to keep the masses under control. It is not a sin to deface the body because there is no such thing as sin. If you want a tattoo get a tattoo. It is your body. Do what you want to it.

I think if they're all important things to you its great if you get it tattooed. One thing I suggest is double check the spelling when the artist does the stencil because sometimes in the draft they may make and error (we're all human) and if they don't speak the language they won't notice. Have fun :)

In some religions decorating the body is a good thing. and tattoo's of the crucifiction have a history going back to the time of christ.

You have a valid point.

People in need of ways to torture themselves, through piercings, tattoos, starvation, branding with hot irons, cutting, and other self-mutilation should get mental health help.

Agreed?

People are strange and wacky. The teachings of many churches
are strange and wacky. Religions often showcase hypocrisy. Welcome to the wonderful world of, "I can tell you what THAT Bible passage means"!!!!
Stir all this together with a pinch of skepticism, and voila! You're confused!
