or an actress?

You don't have to 'do' anything besides declaring yourself as a director.

I think of it on two levels.

One is talent. As a director you are able to see the entire production in your head and you have to have something to say yourself as an artist.

Second is skill. The knowledge of the craft - be it blocking, technical language, historical contexts.

Talent is developed by exposure to the medium, either your own experiences or watching others.

Skill is developed by participating in the creation of work, learning the history of art-making and learning to communicate and lead others towards your vision.

it's sometimes easier to get a directing job if you write the thing it self. you should join a theatre group and take it from there, you could audition for the national theatre. get yourself noticed for the right reasons. most of all you need confidence in your abilities!!

Study film if you want to direct.

Study acting if you want to act.

I notice that you didn't mention anything about being famous.
Which is good.
