I think the Bible clearly teaches that the rapture will be AFTER the Tribulation but before the wrath of God. The whole "Left Behind" phenomenon and the feel-good notion of a pre-trib rapture isn't doing anything good for instilling perseverance in Christians.

I'm not sure that is the case. In the USA, I think most Brethren, Baptist and Pentecostals do follow Darby's dispensationalist view. That's not necessarily the case in Europe, and I have spoken with a lot of South Americans who don't have the vaguest idea of what that's all about - they haven't been taught dispensationalism.
The pretribulation rapture theory was apparently developed by two Jesuit scholars in the Counter-reformation, who wished to refute the idea that present-day Rome was the Babylon of Revelation. So they said basically that the Babylon of Revelation was Rome after the rapture, not now.
Darby taught this theory, and Schofield popularized it in the Schofield REference Bible. This edition of the Bible was so useful that millions of North American believers were soon exposed to that teaching. The Bible School movement also appealed to those who did not wish to do more advanced university level studies. Pre-tribulation Rapture was also promoted in the Bible School movement.
For some time afterward, many Bible teachers implied that the pre-tribulation rapture theory was the only way a true Bible believer could see things, so there was a certain amount of spiritual intimidation hindering people from thinking for themselves. Aftger all no true evangelical believer wanted to be considered a 'liberal' in light of the disastrous results of the liberal modernist movement.

Because it makes sense. When the Bible is rightly divided there are no contradictions. The church is raptured in Rev 4 and God turns His attention to the Jews once again.

Probably because it was in style for a while along with the Scofield reference Bible and so many of the people who are teaching today were raised up in that tradition. I don't follow that view and a lot of honest Christian scholars today say that the doctrine of dispensationalism has been disproved. Still some people who are not open to that view have come up with a revised version of dispensation that seeks to correct some of the obvious errors. I certainly don't hold to a view that contradicts what Jesus said by inventing "tribulation saints" and a separate group of "Jewish elect".
"Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. Then will appear in heaven the sign of the Son of Man, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. And he will send out his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other. Matthew 24:29-31
"Then I saw thrones, and seated on them were those to whom the authority to judge was committed. Also I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for the testimony of Jesus and for the word of God, and who had not worshiped the beast or its image and had not received its mark on their foreheads or their hands. They came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years. The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were ended. This is the first resurrection. Revelation 20:4-5
For this we declare to you by a word from the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord. 1 Thessalonians 4:15-17
Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all die, but we shall all be changed-- in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. 1 Corinthians 15:51-52
Then the seventh angel sounded his trumpet, and there were great voices in heaven, saying, "The kingdom of this world have become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ, and He shall reign forever and ever!" And the twenty-four elders, those before the throne of God who sit on their thrones, fell on their faces and worshipped God, saying: "We give You thanks, O Lord God Almighty, The One who is and who was, because You have taken Your great power and have begun to reign. The nations were angry, and Your wrath has come, and the time of the dead, that they should be judged, and that You should reward Your servants the prophets and the saints, and to those that fear Your name, to the small and to the great, and to destroy those who destroy the earth." Revelation 11:15-18
No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me should draw him; and I will raise him up at the last day. John 6:44
