Check out the symptoms link at www.hufa.org, and see if you have other symptoms of low blood sugar, including depression. There is info on the site on how to self test for low blood sugar.
If it is chronic low blood sugar causing your depression, a change of diet may help, without use of medication.
I would say see the professional. Your regular doctor might not feel comfortable prescribing anti-depressants, as that may not be her specialty - and there are so many and some have side effects. But ask your doctor about testing for high insulin and low blood sugar. She may be willing to do that - especially if you have any diabetics in the family.

Go to a professional. You'll be glad you did. I also was diagnosed with clinical depression just over a year ago. I knew I needed help when I cried for 3 months after losing my job. My gp recommended a psychiatrist. I waited to go t hinking i could solve my problems by myself. Now I don't know why I waited. I am on zoloft and feeling much better about myself. Just talking about the reasons can give you insight that is invaluable! A professional can prescribe the medication that best suits you. My daughter, on the other hand went to a medical doctor who just gave her antidepressents and they made her depression worse rather than better. If you are depressed see a professional!!!

Honestly I've suffered from depression for years. I've since been diagnosed bipolar, but my depression still gets bad somtimes. If I were you I would try to seek professional help. A few sessions where you figure out your triggers and learn coping skills will always be good for you. You can use them now and in the future. Otherwise find another Psychatrist to prescribe you a low dose of anidepressant to get over this hump. If you don't take care of it now, most likely it will get worse, or go away and come back again. Seeking professional help is really the best course of action.

Maybe try another doctor. It was my regular M.D. that put me on antidepressants, but why don't you want to go to a professional?

Depression is very serious. Consider taking you're docs advice.
Try exercising and drinking lots of water. Maybe take a yoga class or meditating. If you try these, and they don't help, then definitely take you're docs advice, before you become suicidal.
