Depends upon the class. Generally though, I chose a subject which I have some passion about. If the constraints of your assignment allow you to do that, it will be easier to remember and your presentation should have more impact. So, whithin the bounds of the assignment, find a topic that you care about.

As important as the topic, is presentation. Spend some time rehearsing in front of a mirror. Look at your face. Keep your chin up. Remember to breathe... it sounds stupid, but good speakers know how to breathe. Your lungs are the backbone to your voice and unless filled properly, your voice can't project. In some music, notations are made as to when to breathe. It's that important.

Look your audience in the eyes... not necessarily always, but sometimes. It helps them to know that you are speaking specifically to them.

Anyway, that's a few hints from somebody whose spoken in public more than once.

It depends on what type of speech you need or want to give. Do you want to Inform your audience about a specific topic? Do you want to Persuade them to believe something? Or do you want to Entertain your audience? I took a speech class in college and these are the tree main categories. Here are some examples of each type:

1. Informative: How to create your own web site, Homelessness, Poverty/Welfare, election coming up etc..
2. Persuasive: Recycle, Voting, Volunteering, Healthy eating etc..
3. Entertaining: Family Vacation, a wedding you attended (or any event), a concert, etc.

I hope this helps. Remember, pick a topic you already know something about. That will make it easier to begin :-)

Well, is it an informative or persuasive presentation? I chose something that I thought was interesting for a speech last year, and it bored the hell out of everyone else. Think of something that people want to know about. My speech for speech team this year is on Myspace and the social aspects of it. I'd go with something timely that has to do with pop culture that people would like. Try to avoid controversial stuff, though. :D

Make a convincing speech about something. Whether it's true or not.
Convince the class that the Landing on the Moon was staged.
Be creative. No one likes "normal" when listening to a presentation, be different.
