I keep hearing about facts and truths--especially when it comes to evolution--since we did not witness how the human race came into this world, and there's no written record, evolution is techinically a belief-a popular, yet unproven and gap ridden belief. When it comes to all facts and truths, they are just things that a majority of people on this planet believe. Think about it--how do you, as a person actually KNOW that the sun doesn't revolve around the earth? because you saw it on television? I watched Sabrina the Teenage Witch a few hours ago does that make it real? Read it in a science book? That is still just a book, like the bible--unless you have actually exited the earths atmosphere, you are just believing what you want to believe-- There are as many illiterate science types on here as there are Xians, so why do you think you're so smart again?

and the gaps in the fossils that "prove" evolution? What, did we skip a step here and there?

I agree. In the early 1900's , a skull was found that was proclaimed to be the missing link. It ended up being found to be the skull and the jawbone of a human and ape fused together. To believe in an intelligent designer does not mean a person can't use science to understand more about our world and history. ONe interesting thing is that no written language materials have ever been found that go past a few thousand years ago. The huge variety of languages and so many different flood legends support the story of the Tower of Babel in Genesis, in that the offspring of Noah had to spread out around the earth cause they could no longer understand one another. This last century has shown man moving in the opposite direction of the evolutionary chain, more animalistic, violent, and with genetic defects and new diseases never known before. I also have a question on how cave drawings prove evolution? Isn't it similar to the graffiti u find on city buildings?

Evolution is based on evidence of fossils and what not. If you do not believe these fossils exist, go to some museum to see them. If you do not believe a scientific finding, replicate it to see if it has validity. If you do not believe that the earth moves around the sun, go out of space and witness it. Technically you could prove anything "proven" if having the right tools, intelligence, and time. However, when we speak about god, there is no tangible or possible way to actually test this or prove it. When "believing" something, believe it based on something rational and logical rather than a random belief that is unsupported logically and scientifically. This "question" may be interesting philosophically, but it is bankrupt objectively.

You are playing with the equivocation and incredulity fallacies.

well thats why we have people EXIT THE EARTHS ATMOSPHERE to figure things like this out....it think its been pretty clear now for a LONG time that the EARTH revolves around the SUN....its been studied. And evolution just means survival of the fittest where a certain species dies out because its not strong enough or one part of the species is born a mutant and from then on the rest of the species has this mutation in the gene. THAT has also been studied, its happening even today as we speak.

What is the question exactly?

The fact that you admit to watching Sabrina the Teenage Witch calls into question your state of mind...

We use the method by which the data was created to determine whether something is a 'fact' or a 'truth' or simply a myth or a wish.

For example, we know the sun doesn't revolve around the earth because ancient scientists, independently in many different areas of the world, arrived at the same conclusion using mathematics to describe or 'prove' their observations. Without proving it again myself, I'm willing to trust in that as a fact. No one gains a penny one way or the other today as a result of that information being shared.

On the other hand, religion is simply hearsay passed down and then written at some point by people with a need to dictate to the masses and control their lives. The priest or minister claiming that the sun revolves around the earth, or that Adam and Eve lived in the Garden of Eden, makes money, gains influence, and determines how you should lead your life--but only if you believe him. In our country, he gets tax-free lifestyle and the privilege of soliciting funds for his own support, simply for promoting these folk tales!

Remember, no one has validated the folk tales or religious stories. They all come from the same source, one small group of people a long, long time ago. The Chinese did not hear of Jesus until someone from that folkway told them about it, but they knew the earth revolves around the sun, and used the same calculations as independent Africans, Arabs and Europeans (and even Mayans) to arrive at that fact.

On the other hand, there is no record of the Star of Bethlehem in any scientist's records anywhere on Earth, the census that served as the reason for Mary giving birth in Bethlehem never took place in any records at all (records for all other census efforts were recorded, as taxes were based on them and the Romans were anal about recordkeeping). There was no slaughter of innocents by any of the kings named Herod. Pontius Pilate's court records show no Jesus trial, no historian at that time mentions Jesus in their documents, there is no astronomy recording of the darkening of the sky on Good Friday, no records of earthquakes that day (or any other near that time, before or after). Some people even dispute whether Nazareth existed except as a burial site at the time that Jesus was supposedly living there!

Facts, even in history from long ago, can be reliably determined because we use the same methods in a court of law today to figure out what happened when nobody making decisions about the situation were present when it happened. If an event, or even the existence of a person, cannot hold up under scrutiny, then it is not fact but mythology.

I hope this helps you separate FACT from FOLKTALE.

Honestly, Truth is and will always be subjective. Scientific fact is only called such as a fallacy of language. Scientific theory occurs after studying test results and retesting to be sure the results are accurate. In the end faith must be a personal thing, and one needs to accept that humans are limited creatures and less than perfect.

Oh, and I'm not entirely smart. I still have stupid moments and doubts but I am sure of my faith and that it is right for me. Does this answer the question you barely asked?

actually, astronomers figured out that the earth moves around the sun well before television. by observation and predictions based on those observations that are then fulfilled. that's the thing about science - it is predicated on repeatable, observable experiments.

if you can read about someone else's ideas, you can try them out yourself. if you can duplicate their experiment or observe what their ideas predict you'll observe, you've added to the evidence pile.

atheism is not believing in something/nothing - it's a rejection of your silly story. if you tell me the great pumpkin is coming, and i think you're a dork, that doesn't make me an apumpkinist, it doesn't mean i believe in nothing and therefore something. this is very weak and silly reasoning used to justify an assault on freedom of religion.
