We are putting laminate in our kitchen. The walls are off white and our appliances are off white as well. In the kitchen we have a oak table and chairs. Not light coloured oak. How do I know what colours to choose for countertops, laminate flooring and we will be painting over our current cupboards to give them an updated look. Ideas please? I have no idea where to begin!

Off white and dark oak...you could do nearly any color choice, but I would do something that complements the rest of the home's decor, or at least the adjoining room. A nice, muted apple green color would be wonderful. You can accent this with off white, creamy yellow (not your grandma's yellow kitchen, but a sophisticated yellow-beige color). You could even go bold with a crimson red color. I would paint the cabinets something complementary instead of off white though, to keep the room from looking washed out. Don't ignore other muted colors like pumpkin oranges, cool blues (look really nice with grey-ish undertones or yellow undertones and brushed nickel fixtures), or also...again, the green family. Happy decorating!

try something simple because of change later on. the table and chairs shouldn't be an issue. the walls and decorations around it will. You simply cant ask a ? with little details. Use off white or white for the cabinets. you can choose the knobs and maybe paint the surface around the cabinet doors a solid. but importantly use moderate decorations. floral with chandelier? wood and country look use your imagination but put the theme in your mind then jot down your ideas and stick to it. It sounds like you know what you like just trust your instinct and do a little at a time.

I would get a bunch of paint strips from lowes, home depot or paint shops. Take them with you to look at countertops. lay the strips down, hold them to the wall, and even on the table. Eventually you'll pick one you like. As you do it though have someone stand off in the distance to get a different look. That way one gets a close up then the other gets a different view. Oh, as you choose the colors, fold the strips to expose the ones you like and alternate between all those that you have chosen.

It may sound like it takes too much time, but it's your home and that is what we did. We ended up loving the colors. I actually helped my friend out and I did this with her at her home and she was able to narrow it down. As a matter of fact, the color she thought she wanted, she didn't want it when we put it up against her wall.

When it comes to decorating my best advice to you is to use neutral colors. Something that will allow you to change your decor on a whim by changing your contrasting color along with your window & wall treatments. Therevore preventing you from having to change floors and walls. Browns & greens, along with any of the earth tones are great base colors for walls, floors, & countertops. Currently, the going colors are shades of the jewel tones such as browns, golds, reds & greens. Ex: brown, taupe, tans, & rust tones; tones of sage & celery green; topaz & muted orange tones - You pick any of these and you will not go wrong.

Go with a beigh or a brown, something with granite, and smooth cabinets.
