at 5 they were collecting and delivering their dirty laundry to the laundry room.
I was teaching them to separate the colours / whites by 8 or 9 (didn't always work, but they knew)
at 12 they were able to operate the machine, and the dryer / or hang out the wash, and they were able to iron.

When I was about 7 or 8 I had to start helping with laundry by hanging things on the clothesline, taking things off the clothes line, and folding. As I got older I started learning how to use the washer and dryer too. By the time I was 13 I was was fully responsible for laundry.

It varies greatly from child to child. Our oldest (11 but autistic) we waited until he was 10 and he started out with sorting and folding. He now helps by putting in laundry and soap only. I do the bleach out of self defense (I let him do a load of jeans one day and he bleached them). Our middle child is 6 and she helps by sorting and folding laundry. She's pretty responsible and is interested in taking on more responsibility so I'll probably have her adding soap here soon.

Both kids are responsible for putting up their own laundry as well. Our youngest is 3 months so we'll have to wait a little bit to see when he's able to handle the responsibility.

I started my sons helping me around age 8 yrs. I showed them how to separate colors. Which heat to use on what. They do their own laundry now. They are 16 & 18. They will even help me with the household laundry. Becky

Mine is 2 and he loves to load the dryer when I hand him clothes outta the wash. He also loves to roll around on the bed in warm clothes out of the dryer. So the love affair started early.

I hope to have him doing it on his own by about middle school. I will make it enticing and very exciting to do laundry. If that does not work then I will find out then.

Mine have been sorting their clothes since they were 5. They know what is dark, white and "other." My kids kept throwing clean clothes in the laundry pile, so now we wash and dry them, but they take the clothes out of the dryer and fold them and put them away on their own. (They're 7 and 8 now.) I'm not their maid, and it's cut down on the amount of laundry we do now.

Start them incrementally from the time they can walk. When they can walk they can toddle to the hamper with dirties. By the time they are 2-3 they can be handed folded laundry to put in their drawers. As they age they can do it more and more independently. My children started operating the washer and dryer between 12-13. They still don't fold how I like it, so they do theirs and I do mine. Personally I had my kids doing as much as possible as early as possible.. Good Luck!

I'm 14 years old and my mom or older sister wash my clothes. But my Mom teaches me how to gather my clothes together and make a load. It's kinda sad that I don't do my laundry but at least I'm learning now.

I plan on starting my kids off with that when they're in their preteens or early teen years.

I think that it's a good age about the time they start deciding to change clothes every 2 hours cause they think their out fit does not look good enough. Maybe about 10 years old I would say.
So they fully understand how to do laundry.
